Flights in and out of Cork Airport were delayed this morning after the airport was forced to close due to a drone flying in the area.

Garda? are currently on site and are dealing with the matter.

A spokeswoman for the airport said that service has since resumed but aircrafts are approaching "with caution".

"There was a drone spotted in the airport and we had two aircraft on hold but now pilots have been told to come back in, obviously with caution".

The airplanes were forced to circle the airport and were unable to land during the incident after the drone was spotted at 9.45am this morning.

"Garda? remain on the scene as they try to find the culprit," the spokeswoman said.

Cork Airport was the first Irish airport to launch a 'no drone zone' as part of a crackdown on rogue drone operators last year.

It is illegal to operate a drone within 4.5km of an airfield under new rules introduced by the Irish Aviation Authority.

Absolutely stupid flying a drone near an airport.
    Should have been shot down.

Whilst I do agree that it is not clever to fly around with a drone near an airport, I think it is not a good idea to start shooting around an airport.

    Why not?

It is only OK if you are a member of the "Cork Airport Runway 07 Gun Club". ;-)

Landed at 10:00 a few minutes early for an interview. Thank God. Forgot my documents though, thank God for Amazon direct to terminal service though.

Just heard about this. Can't see another thread but please delete if there is.

I have toyed with the idea of getting one but the more I hear of them, the more I think that they should be very, very tightly controlled, licensed etc. and I'll leave them to the professionals.

    Wrong approach.

Jam the controller band. Most modern drones will enable the RTB function when control is lost, leading you directly back to the dude flying it. Easy collar for the Gardai.

No longer easy to do, as the modern radio systems operate on a frequency agile system that moves around the band, and there are other authorised users in the same area of the spectrum that would be VERY unhappy if a blocking transmitter was being used in the area.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Not certain, but jamming is also probably illegal under the relevant comms legislation also.

Fairly sure that if the drone can be seen, there are jammers that can be used to disrupt the electronics, but that means it won't return to the start location, and there's a lot of risks involved in a drone falling out of the sky in an uncontrolled manner, the LiPo batteries that they use are very unstable if mechanically damaged by a crash, and the weight of some of the larger drones is considerable, which could do significant damage to persons or property on the ground. The legalities of jamming can be resolved relatively easily, as the jammer operator is likely to be an "approved" user in the legal sense of the word, so one government regulator approving another government body to use a device that's otherwise illegal is not going to be a show stopper.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

well we can either do it like they do in Japan with police using drones to catch drones or we can do it like they do in Netherlands where they train eagles to take out drones.. .or we can do it like we usually do in Ireland and not do anything about it because of the high risks of hurting culprits feelings

I don't know if it's just me, but I absolutely love the elegance of the idea of an errand drone being ripped to shreds by the talons of an angry eagle.

Fair play to the Dutch :)

Fire brigade and a hosepipe. Works wonders.

It would be an interesting sight to see a fire engine capable of projecting a water jet to 1500 Ft above ground, which is what might be required to take out a drone on the ILS path.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

I'm surprise at the AH attitude taken by posters in this thread as I would have thought the proliferation of drones would have been a worry for the 'thinking' aviation enthusiast?
