I think you would be better off posting this in the Motors forum. Ask a Mod to move it for you. Oh, and welcome to Boards.ie.

Just a matter of interest OP - how long had you been driving the van here whilst on UK plates? Did it have insurance, UK tax, and a valid MOT?

Seems like they are now enforcing the 48 hours strictly or will take it off you. In a way thats fair, too many driving around for weeks on UK plates.

I thought it was 7 days to make the appointment with the NCTS and 30 days to complete the whole process?

How long as it in the country?
VRTing a commercial isn't too expensive and any fines would be based as a percentage of that per day I imagone. Surprised they gave you no paperwork

maybe its different for commercials but for private cars it is 10% of the OMSP.

i thought it was 0.15% per day of the VRT amount, cumulatively

I'm going by what they said on that Customs tv show. this seems to confirm it http://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/courts/circuit-court/revenue-official-responsible-for-vrt-fines-stole-19-350-1.2154704

you might be thinking of the extra charge if you pay the vrt late.

I'm not condoning people being late paying VRT but if any arm of the State takes your property they should deal with you in a proper manner.
You should be given a receipt and contact details to find your property so you can regularise the situation.
