The carpets and soft furniture in my house need to be cleaned but I'm wary about using Vanish like cleaning products. I've also read that products that professionals use can be very irritating to there skin too. Does anyone have advice or used products that worked out ok?

Sorry Mods if this is the wrong place...I thought it would reach the right people here.

I cover soft furnishings with large pieces of fabric that can be washed in non-bio. Dried outside...Have evicted the rugs and all hard floors here.

I just use warm water and washing powder(or liquid one) on actual dirty marks, dilute it really well.
But mostly sofas are covered in throws, I use a steamer to deodorise every few weeks, it's great, a couple of my friends have asked why my house never smells like I have animals

Is your soft furniture fabric? I didn't realise that they could be steamed. The steam doesn't damage the fabric?

Yep, all fabric sofas, and I do stair carpet (only place we have carpet) too, no issues, if you're worried try a little patch on the back, but I've had no issues.
Just make sure it's a good high power steamer, some of the cheap ones are craps, I got a vax one on Amazon for about £65 few years ago, it's been used a lot. Well worth the money.
