    hi.

so i've had my tractor licence (Category W Learner's Permit) for over a year now. i went in today to get category B (car) added to it, and was told that my new licence would be here in 10 working days. im wondering can i drive a car while waiting for it? how would anybody know as i could say its lost and im waiting for a replacement?

    thanks in advance

Strictly speaking, you are required to carry a licence with you at all times on the road. Also, you won't hold the entitlement to drive on the new category until you pass muster and you are granted it - if something as trivial as forgetting to sign the app form has occurred and you must be contacted for a new form, you won't hold cat B until it is approved, printed and dispatched to you. If you made a new error on the new app form, your application may be rejected and you may have to reapply, therefore, if you drive before the error is discovered and rectified, you are driving without a licence.

In a nutshell, it's a little different if you already earned the entitlement to hold the learner category for 'B' having taken your EDT's and the rest as any problems would be administrative. The same for a full entitlement that you wish to renew I'd say 10 days is pessimistic at the moment. I'd advise to hang tough.

As the last poster stated 'hang tough and wait'.

It's wouldnt be hard for gardai to find out that your permit wasnt 'lost' if they needed too (e.g. if you were stopped at a checkpoint or involved in a collision).

What about insurance? Don't you need to have your learner permit to get insured or put on as a named driver?

as far as i know you just have to supply driver number, which would be the same as the old permit
