I've flights booked for Venice in Mid-July for 8 days. The plan is to spend 3 days in Venice, then the remainder in Lake Garda.

Where would you recommend to stay for a mid-twenties couple? We'll be relying on public transport. Not much into sun, so we'd like to have activities, sights nearby.

    Thank you in advance. :)

Riva del Garda at the top of the lake has a lot of water sports if you like that or Sermione is a gorgeous walled town at the bottom of the lake.
Getting around can be done from most towns by boat.

Stayed in Desenzano on the south of the Lake, it was early October so was quietish, but good enough selection for nightime. Hired a car for the week, so drove right around the lake, lovely area. Ferries and boats zig zag all over the lake making travelling around at your own pace easy. The south of the lake more populated with good restaurants, shops etc, as said above the northern half heading upto the alps is more sporty with lots of water activities, mountain biking, hiking etc. Nice cable car climb up into the mountain there too.
Done a day in Venice, brilliant experience, 3 days will be loads of time to see all the city has to offer. Centre of Venice is expensive but stray down any side streets and its ok.
Took an early morning train ride (about 90 mins, approx. 50 euro return ) to Milan for a day. Just done the touristy open top bus spin around to try see as much as possible in short time. Nice city. Cathedral roof top tour is good, but queues were longish even in early October.
I'm not the biggest fan of Italian food here as a choice for a meal out, but hell I loved the food over there. Pricewise, not much difference to here really in general for meals, activities etc . Enjoy your holiday.

mountain biking in Malcesine ( i think the nicest town around Lake garda, good base with plenty of transport options), bring the bike to the top in the cable car:

lovely for hill walking as well.
