Seems work finally started today in a small way. The island outside the Roundabout Inn has been removed

Hopefully this work will allow turns on to the N72 to the west to take place in both directions without queuing with the N20 traffic whilst staring at an almost empty lane, largely used by queue jumpers.

What is the plan? Are they going to allow both lanes on N20 to go straight through and respective 1st and 3rd exits ?

i haven't seen the plan, but the roundabout is being moved slightly southwards to allow two lanes of traffic to flow around it apparently

Essentially, yes. Two lanes of N20 around the roundabout both northbound and southbound.

Why it was any other way, i will never know.

At present, the roundabout is too small to accommodate two heavy lanes on the N20 safely. Hence the pavement around the roundabout is being widened to allow 2 lane running north and south

Will be great when done but the construction phase will be headwrecking

yes , I think the plan has been described poorly locally, focusing on having two lanes around the roundabout rather than emphasising the through flow in two lanes of the N20.

The island itself is said to be being made slightly smaller and moved southwards a little.

Partly funded by Dairygold as part of their planning permission to extend their nearby plant.

Would it not make significant sense to add a 3rd lane coming from the south to facilitate traffic heading west?

it's the through N20 traffic that is the problem, in both directions.

Passed through here earlier, no sign of anything happening apart from the splitter island being coned off, then I saw on the VMS it's night works, so hopefully disruption will be minimal.
Only fear I have is that by making N20 traffic more free flowing, is that N72 traffic will be at a standstill.

A fair amount of N20 (N) to N72 (W) traffic uses the R638/R620/R621 via the sugar factory anyway so I don't think it'll be much of an issue.

it's often in a standstill in a queue of N20 traffic anyway, can only be better

The horse and jockey statue was moved due to height??? Why the he’ll did the plant a tree in the middle of the new design if height was an issue. Max height of 1.05m. That tree they planted is well above that as is the new signage if u measure it from road level to center of roundabout .. can see them re-doing this at more tax payer expense .. planning dept. means your supposed to plan

update: the road markings have finally been corrected to show Limerick in both lanes northbound.

In other news: The speed limits in the locality have been increased on both the N20 and the N72
