Have a very large spruce on the farm which I would like to be chopped down. It's beside a rural road. How much would a professional cost?

Which way it's leaning? If it's natural lean is towards the road, then it'll have to be pulled or taken down in bits.

Get a local farmer to cut it down - every farmer I know has a chainsaw, and most know how to use it. If it's leaning towards a road, tie a tractor on to it with a long tow chain to pull it back into the field as it falls. Have someone out on the road to stop traffic until it's down.

A farmer could cut it for you but he won't have insurance. Sometimes these trees don't fall the way you want. Could end up damaging a car or worse.
I knocked a large tree once in a busy road. Had 2 other guys with me. One at each side and traffic cones across the road.
Don't pull with a wire rope or chain. Both are elastic and if they snap, they'll fly back into the poor guy in the tractor. Lifting straps or large nylon rope much safer.

The tree is large enough ( width) that it could drag 2 tractors with it.

Then you're talking about a pro claiming it and knocking the top off it

A professional will be a minimum of €800 depending on the tree.

So they'd ring it and leave all timber to you for that?
