    Check out the Bruce Willis documentary about how scientists dealt with that exact problem in the late 90's OP.

    There's a great trilogy of books called the Last Policeman, which is about an asteroid that is heading towards the earth, which is large enough to cause an extinction level event with no way of stopping it, and how the world copes knowing their destruction is imminent.
