Replace oil central heating with gas

Wondering about replacing an old oil central heating system with gas. We are in final stages of buying a house and wondering how much to budget for updating the heating system.

It's an early 80's house and has original oil boiler. We are expecting to replace the boiler and update controls etc... but I have always used gas, and I am under impression it is cheaper to run..
So as we are most likely replacing the boiler anyway, I was thinking it might be worth installing gas!!??

It's a 4 bed semi in a large housing estate in Cabinteely, so I'm assuming the gas network is already servicing the area.

Anyone have any idea how much it would cost to replace with gas, and would it be worth it??

I can't remember all the details but it is five or six grand when all is said and done.

That boiler is end-of-life and does need replacing. Also, the tank (if it is the original steel one) needs to be replaced too.

These jobs would cost you 3500 or more. You might as well spend the extra 2 or 3 grand and get the gas.

Incidentally, you might as well think about changing the uninsulated copper cylinder while you are at it.

There is a third alternative - an electric heat pump -. This really depends on the house being well insulated and is likely to require extra radiators to be fitted. But it might be worth looking at.

If you would like us to help you with the cost of connecting to the gas network pop over to our Talk To page. We can provide you with all the information on the benefits of natural gas. You would need to contact an RGI for the cost of the internal pipework, you will find a full list of them on http://www.rgii.ie

    Thanks,
