The make up I've been using for years just doesn't look the same on my skin as it used to.
I'm wondering is there anywhere I can go that will advise me on best make up to buy for me.
If I ask at a counter/beautician, they'll only recommend what they sell.

I'm afraid the only way here is to try a few different ones. Counter staff will only push their own like you said.

What are your needs/concerns/ skincare type? I'm sure posters here can recommend a few for you to test. Also, how is your skincare? If your skin has changed it's important to address that too

    Thanks for the reply.

My skin is good. Other than some wrinkles, which don't bother me.
Never had a problem with spots, or dry or oily patches.
It's just that make up doesn't go on and stay on like it used.
I've been using an Elizabeth Arden compact for about 15 years.
A change will do no harm at this stage!

I'm useless with make up, applying and choosing.
I don't want to have to buy loads to find something that suits me.

Are you mainly talking about foundation? If so I'd suggest getting samples from the main beauty counters and trying them each out for a few days to see what you like.

Note that even if you buy the same foundation (or any other make up) for years and year, some brands can re-formulate the products.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,405 ✭✭✭Airyfairy12

It could just be a reformulation otherwise maybe try a more creamy or liquid foundation, something light and natural thats moisturising and adds glow.

I find compacts incredibly drying. Your best bet would be to look at a liquid foundation. YSL do good foundations IMO

I've tried double wear and found it just sinks into my pores, whereas, to date, the compact just smoothed over everything.
I may try it again seeing as my skin is rejecting my usual product!

    Thanks for all the replies.

You could try a primer under your usual foundation?
Smashbox photofinish is lovely and I've stuck with it since discovering it. There are probably more out there but I'm not familiar with them. If you can get a tester/sample from a smashbox counter before splurging on it, give it a go.

I use a primer, Clarins flash balm, when going out, but maybe I should use one daily now.

Double wear will do that without a good primer, maybe you'd consider trying a different one? As mentioned above the smashbox one is very good and will give an incredibly smooth finish.

I've never tried using beauty flash balm is a primer so I don't know what it's like but it's no harm trying something new if you're using it every day.

I think at this point there is no harm in changing it up! I would check out the NARS counter. I recently moved to the sheer glow and I have to say its fab! Buildable and has a decent amount of coverage. The nicest one I have tried since getting that bit older!

Primer's used in the areas needed daily will also help.

    Good luck with the hunt!

Double wear is very drying and I dont know if the formulas changed but I find the last bottle I bought emphasises lines and pores even with a primer, its also very yellow lately and is it just me or has shade bone gotten darker? It used to match me perfectly, id actually need to warm it up and im super pale. The last bottle I got in bone was way too dark and so yellow toned that I looked like I had Jaundice, people even came up and told me that I was looking very yellow, my dad who wouldnt bat an eyelid if my leg was hanging off commented on my yellow skin after using it.

Ive since moved on to giorgio armani Luminous silk and I absolutely love it, id recommend picking up a sample, it melts into the skin, it looks very natural but has great medium coverage, covers all my redness and uneven skin tone with two pumps, a little goes along way, its dewy and moisturising too and doesn't settle into any lines. The Giorgio Armani Power fabric is meant to be great too but it has fuller coverage so maybe that would suit you more if you like heavier foundations, maybe get a sample of it if you think you might like it.

I'm on DW Bone as well and now that I think of it, you're right. It has got a bit yellower!

Bone has yellow tones, shell is the palest in the range and has pink tones but it's harder to find! I can't use bone its too yellow like you say, shell is perfect though :)

Yeah ive been trying to find shell but any chemist near me that sells double wear dont have that shade for some reason, its really hard to get. I think Debenhams have it online but tbh im happy with Luminous silk so dont think ill bother investing in DW again.

Where can you buy smash box products?
Was in a couple of department stores today and didn't see it.

Boots sell it and usually have a stand in store so you could get a sample if you pop in.

Airy fairy yes DW shell is in Debenhams and bts. Must try luminous silk after that review!!

I'm a bit older as well and am lucky that I've very good skin Daily I just wear a tinted moisturiser, by Liz Earle I think heavy foundation daily wrecks your skin.

Have been looking for a foundation for going out for ages and no joy. Tried double wear, very heavy looking, benefit, stung my eyes and numerous others. Most of these made me look older.

Got Lingerie de Peau by Guerlain and wore it over he Smashbox primer. It looked really good. Light coverage, loved it.

I think the smash is primer better than clarins Clarins went like greasy film on me

I am older too and have been using YSL Touche Eclat for about 3 years, loved it, of course they reformulated it last year and it's just not the same.

The thoughts of searching for a new one, I always end up sitting at makeup counters in Debenhams been tango'd, it was hard enough to get the Touche Eclat in the first place. I find many counters don't like giving you samples they would rather put it on you there and then which I don't want.

This is very annoying. I've gone in about 10 times to Chanel in boots to request a sample but there's never any. I don't want them to put it on me. Last time I bought benefit, they put it on me, it was grand, after about 3 days though it with me putting it on stung my eye and skin. Waste of a load of money.

I did not sample the Guerlain one, bought it at an airport and it just worked.

I'm in my forties and use the flawless finish liquid foundation from Elizabeth Arden and love it
I don't use a primer though I tried smash box and it brought me out in pimples

Double wear I found very heavy

All I remember is that it was in silver packaging?

Edit I think it was the photo finish one

Probably the photo finish one it's the most common. It has a black band top and bottom and clear around the middle if that helps!

Such a pity it didn't work, they do a lovely hydrating one if you're ever in boots and feel like grabbing a sample. It's kinda green and is lovely for more sensitive skin. That's if you're not put off totally!!

    Just saw your edit!! :)

Oh I might try that, how hard was it to pick the right colour?

They do a colour matching service was very accurate for me
Then I got a sample that lasted a week

I have the hydrating photofinish and its lovely, I wasnt fussed on it at first but now I use it every day and it lasts ages, I have it about 3 or 4 months and ive still got nearly a full tube of it left, they do travel size ones for like 15 euro and testers for about 10 I think.

I've seen it on Boots website but not in store (small Boots though).
If you going through any airport shopping anytime soon, it's usually available there (and on offer the odd time).
