Just got a promotional email from Eir, and it seems like they are going to share out customers broadband to other customers....
I could be reading it wrong of course - here's what it says :
As an eir customer you can connect safely and securely to over 100,000 WiFi hotspots nationwide with eir WiFi. No more having to ask for passwords as you will automatically connect to the WiFi of other eir broadband customers. Plus, with eir WiFi you can surf to your heart's content on your mobile without eating into your mobile data!

Are they allowed so this ? Couldn't it severely impact the speed of some customers depending on what the connected people are doing ?

Like I said - I could be reading it wrong....

It's pretty much the same as the service Virgin Media have done for years. The guest access is limited to a max of 3megs, regardless of the number of guest users. And you can turn it off if you prefer, though at the cost of using other peoples guest access yourself.
