Best way to enable future switches between ISP's

    Hi there,

Currently renovating. House has both cable (Virgin Media working) and an eircom phone line. Virgin (old UPC box) currently located behind TV. Phone line is just inside front door. What I want to do is enable easy switching between ISP providers.

What I'm thinking of doing is chasing the eircom phone line to same location as Virgin cable behind the TV.

Anybody done anything similar? Thinking being the router will always be in same location no matter what provider I'm using allowing me to run some Cat6 cables to other locations.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Personally id run both to somewhere concealed and central, dont want my router buried in a cabling web behind an aluminium RF shield(TV).

Tbh if you'll be with Virgin for 2yrs the location of any xDSL will be obsolete. And if your UTP runs are at a switch the router can always move by using one of your existing runs to feed it.

Hmm, shows how much I know as I didn't realise placing near a TV was an issue! Don't know if I'll have any other options though, other than put in attic (regular 2 story house).

Will DSL will be obsolete that soon? Is this with SIRO on the way?

What are the potential entry points for broadband going forward, phone line, cable (virgin media) and new line from external electrical power / metre box (SIRO)?

I unfortunately am pretty clueless as to what's my best course of action so thanks for the reply

The 3x access networks would be:
    Virgin DOCSIS
    OpenEir FTTH
    SIRO FTTH

All three will enter in varying ways from house to house.

Virgin cable enters in attic. Phone line comes in beside front door. From what I gather, SIRO is installed from electricity metre box and drilled through to inside?

Best case so I gather is to run Cat6 cables from each of the 3 locations to the same point, possibly in the attic.

Would the attic be a recommended location for a router?

If using Virgin also for TV at moment I'd need to keep wall mounted signal splitter in same spot beside TV, or I guess I could run a coax cable from attic (central hub) for TV?

I do hope to eventually go to saorview and freeview

I can't think of any suitable location for router on first floor
