There's an old asbestos roof on my aunts cottage that's leaking and we are going to replace it with new felt, battens, slates in the summer. We know we have to get a contractor out for removal but would they also have to remove the timber structure aswell or will this be OK to work on. As for costs, is it expensive for a contractor to remove this? Its only a 12mx4.5m cottage with a gable roof. The peak isnt to high!

Where in the country are you? There are 3 or so main asbestos companies I'm aware of they rate quiet high in an Ireland google search - you'd best to just ring them and ask for a quote.

From memory 1m3 sealed bag ('1ton bag') will be ~500€ Just for disposal
The guys need to ware special gear and be able to give you a cert and initially proof of competency and proper disposal documents.

Tagged compliant Scaffolding will be as expensive as compliant asbestos removal.

Can the timber be still used

for 'an asbestos' perspective-yeah I'd expect so. Ask the experts. Battens and felt would typically be removed.

Shaggy: what timber are you taking about here?

What is the make up of the existing g roof
    asbestos , ?,? ....whats inside?
If the roof rafters are in good shape, [not rotten or woodworm infested] then slates wont be any heavier than the asbestos so just use breathable felt and if you have the room, go counter battened...

I think they are 4x2s, most in good shape apart from one or two were theres a hole.

Probably with roof purlins underneath so easy enough to double up if one or two look a bit iffy, check for woodworm and rotten timber and be prepared to treat it in situ when roof is stripped: no need for Ghostbusters type drama:D

I see amazon are selling asbestos suits and masks. Is it legal to remove this ourselves and bring wrapped to an asbestos disposable dump?

The legal is perhaps a grey area..

You will have found the rules re doubled wrapped and taped, using strong plastic.

I don't think you can bring it because you can only access the recycling centres and they don't want it mixed up with the baby clothes...

What I have done in the past is double wrap and tape and then call a skip company to deliver a skip and place it gently in the bottom: no hiding it.

As per removal, if it is kept damp/wet during removal and storage and no dust is created and all surfaces washed down when finished then it is not a health risk.

IMO, much easier control the dust as source rather than using masks, so maybe use a garden sprayer when pulling the nails.

However if you have a nosey neighbour.....

Just went through this last year. But I'm open to correction:

It must be removed from site by registered disposal company

All removal must be in accordance with HSA guidelines

Asbestos removal from house to bag, seems to fall under the welfare at work guidelines - so when I asked the HSA can the homeowner remove the asbestos they suggested (and I'm paraphrasing ) 'if you pay someone they must be suitable trained to remove'
