No real point in getting the bigger 1.4 engine as it's not that much more powerful than the 1.2

More popular in the UK than here.

Would timing belt need to be done if not done already?

    Yes

    Yes

    Cheers Colm,

Looking for a small engine starter car for girlfriend

Anything to look out for when buying a Fiesta this age?

A 1.2 version here in Limerick but very high mileage
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2004-fiesta/14793587

    Kia Rio be an option?
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2006-kia-rio-1-4-low-milage/15121277

    Micra here
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/nissan-micra-2004-with-new-test-june-2018/14781012

But would be worried about timing chain problems, expensive to fix.

Would you not just get her a Yaris? That said, are you aiming for a particular year for insurance reasons?

Ya might wait it out for a Yaris to come up

    One here
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mint-yaris-for-sale/15053811

Would you be worried about the chain going on a 100k miles Yaris?

Any tell tale signs to look out for?

Nah, unless it's been neglected it should be fine. You'd hear the rattle off it if it was bad.

They are very good cars IMO. They're related to the Yaris. There are no Daihatsu dealers in Ireland now AFAIK but Subaru did a version of this car called the Justy and parts are the same. There's a JDM Toyota version called the Passo so Toyota dealers could get parts too.

They're nice because they usually have aircon and stuff that you don't normally get on a 1.0 hatch. Engine is 3 cylinder, very similar to 06 onwards Yaris engine.

Parts could be pricey though? Not gonna get them off Micks garage or the likes.

Have to go through Subaru or Toyota?

You'll still get general maintenance stuff in motor factors, micksgarage etc.
Just saying for dealer specific stuff like an electric window switch or whatever you can use Subaru or Toyota

There is also a Perodua (Malaysian brand) version too!
This has the Toyota 1.3 engine
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/perodua-myvi-1-3i-2007/15117159

Not sure if insurers would have heard of it though, but that's good value there! (Back bumper needs paint though)

Ya real good value there for 07 and that spec.

Will have to get an insurance quote and see.

    This car showing as
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2006-kia-rio-1-4-low-milage/15121277

    Change Of Vehicle Ownership
    Purchased by a Dealer on : 31/03/2017
    Notified on : 03/04/2017
No Vehicle Registration Certificate issued in the last 3 months

    1 previous owner

But looks like a private sale, dodgy?

Nah, just taken as a trade in to a main dealer and sold off to the trade (or part time tax-free car flipper)

From googling I think the Rio needs timing belt changed at 60k miles so will need to see if that's done.

If it is done do you then have another 60k miles with new belt?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yeah as far as I know the 1.4 in those has a belt. Think the one in the Ceed has a chain. Belt could already be done if it's a 1 owner car.

I'd look at this one also. It's a higher spec Steel model and a year younger.

I'd check insurance on a few models before calling.
It's def worth less than a 1.2 model. Seems thereabouts for what it is.

Would the high mileage not put you off? 200k versus 88k

Will do cheers Colm, is the 1.4 engine as reliable as the 1.2?

It's a 12 year old car so 125k miles is going to be average enough for a car of that age. Irish people seem to have an allergic reaction to anything with 6 digits on the clock If it has been serviced regularly and belts changed I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Low mileage does not automatically equate to better condition. A fair share of low mileage cars may not get regular maintenance or servicing because their owners think they don't need it. Being parked up for extended periods of time is not good for a car as parts can seize and fluids break down. I'd rather a high mileage old car serviced frequently than a similar low mileage one serviced every 2 or 3 years.

Talked to the guy selling the 1.4, he says it was imported from the North, was bought under a mobility scheme originally(is a manual though?) and timing belt changed, two previous owners.

Should i do a motorcheck considering its an import, in case it was once a write off?

    NUI9942

Imported November 15 and no flags to say it was ever a write off. Can't tell much more about it from the check I have access to.

The 1.4 I was going to see looks like its gone.

Does this seem very cheap for a 2005 ,long NCT, low mileage, timing belt done and sold from a dealer. €1650

Just be aware it isn't tested. Maybe it's part of the deal that they'll do it, but it's due and there's also a cancellation fee due on it too (sadly this transfers to any new owner) just in case you end up having to test it yourself.

Seems about right, again being 1.4 it's worth less than a 1.2 would be.

Garage is only in business a few months. Not that you'd be expecting aftrsles on such a cheap car.

    Well spotted Colm.

It says on advert NCT till May 2018 so that looks dodgy.

    Yaris available in Limerick

Would high mileage 140k miles be ok with a Yaris?

    Colm,

Went to see this Micra yesterday
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/nissan-micra-1-0-ltr-06-nct-1-18/15301011

Scrap on the door and the oil was very low when I checked dip stick but girlfriend really liked it.

He will come down to 1800 is that a fair price of a 2006?

Anything I should look out for on the Micra? couldn't hear any rattle off the timing chain.

That car has difference shades of paint on various panels - the drivers door and driver's wing are different shades to each other and the rest of the car. Timing chains can stretch on them too. I wouldn't be paying 1800 for that one and that model Micra is nowhere near as good as a Fiesta.

Will try to get her to look at a different car so.
