Apart from the M7/M9 merge, I have not seen any other illuminated road signs in Ireland. Are there others? They are quite popular in the UK, but we don't seem to use them at all... why?

Cost. It needs services, and maintenance, plus a bill from ESB. We can hardly maintain the unlit signs we have.

I didn't think that sign at the diverge was lit up in years. I know it was years ago but hadn't been working in ages. Though in fairness I haven't passed at night in a long time.

Are there illuminated signs around the jack lynch tunnel in Cork? I thought I saw them there before

Some of those signs are rotating flaps that change when there's a tunnel closure/crash/maintenance, and given Irish drivers reluctance to read signs having them lit up is useful.

I remember there used to be a UK styled Traffic light ahead warning sign outside Dublin Airport that was illuminated. It was there until the mid 80s as far as I remember, though I don't think the light ever worked on it.

    It's still lit up, alright.

I think improvements in vehicle lighting and retroreflective sign materials have made illuminated signs largely redundant.

In cold weather, I notice that the newer sign posts (e.g. big directional signs) always seem to fog up and hard to read. Anyone else notice this?

That sounds as if it is frost forming on the sign. Maybe they need heating built in. :)

or maybe illuminated lights would keep them warm!

Modern signs/traffic lights use LED bulbs which produce no heat unlike old incandescent bulbs.

This is the one downfall to the increasing changeover to LED, whilst energy savings, general brightness/visability and reliability have all increased the lack of heat causes problems in cold weather with condensation or issues with snow which can then distort/block such signs or traffic lights.
