We have a little cat 7 months old (male) and he is the most communicative thing ever, as well as the usual 'mehow' sounds he does this 'brrrr' sound as if rolling his tongue, especially when he gets food, is it a "thanks for feeding me" sound, has anyone come across this before?

I think what you're talking about is called "trilling". One of mine does this when I startle him by petting him when his eyes are closed or he's looking the other way. It's adorable.

My Dude who passed away last year was the king of the 'brrrrs'.
He would do it whenever he saw someone he liked, when we got home from work in the evening, when he saw a bird he wanted, when my other cats walked past him, when he saw the vet he liked, and the best time, when we brought home a tiny kitten on her way to her forever home. He brrrrrd for about an hour straight every time she moved! I like to think it's a happy sound :D

Is that not the same as a cat purring no?

    Nope, it's louder and shorter!

My cat is the queen of sounds. She is a tortie and if she is awake, she is usually chatting in some way. She growls if someone comes to the front door and if she is watching birds or in hunting mode she makes a "kuh kuh kuh" sound. I have never come across that before.

My partner is always petting our cat when he's asleep just to make him trill. He loves the noise. It's so cute.

We've had a couple of chattering cats. Trilling is a good description. Both our chatterers have been girls.

You should be able to find some video's of chatterers on youtube

Our tortie is a very vocal girl. Always has something to say - especially if you are on the phone!
She does what we call 'Akk akk akk' sounds when looking at birds, her whole face twitching.

Ginger cat trills a lot, her occasionally.

Never had a cat who miaous... My three each have their own sounds. The big boy specialises in face to face silent miaous... Totally pathetic, and a kind of hoarse broken cry if you take no notice.

I love it when cats make that noise like, "huh?" It's like a, "mhmm??" with the raised accent at the end and they're like what?
