A3 saloon

    A3 saloon. New. Choice of 1litre petrol (110 bhp), 1.4 petrol (150bhp) or 1.6 diesel (120bhp).

Thinking of making move to petrol and enjoying the 1.4 with a bit extra power.

A dealer has told me I'll have to order the petrol 3 months in advance as only diesels generally in stock. Seemed to think I was crazy wanting petrol even when I said I only do 12k per year.

Anyway, overall thoughts appreciated. Also what max cash discount to expect from Audi buying straight up.

    Thanks.

Petrol is much better to be honest people need to get away from diesel.

You could possibly get maybe 1 to 2k off. But shop around try a different few dealers.

Please go for the purple/blue colour it looks amazing in the saloon.

He only said you are crazy going for petrol because he had diesel ones in stock and wants to shift them and earn money this month. Go get the petrol if that's what you want.

What's crazy about it? A few less mpg? Big deal. 150bhp in an a3 would be nice.

If you have a 3 month wait list go to a few different dealers and get prices see whats the best deal you can get. Then play one off against the other you will soon keep them honest. Expect them all to push their stock cars on you but get what you really want, you are the customer.

I'd be skeptical that you could get €3k off tbh.

A dealer has hinted 5% to me, so circa 1,700.

Try and get the S line because the se looks dull and boring.

Petrol all day if you can. Modern turbo petrols are lovely and pretty good on fuel.

1.5 over 1.0? Would the 1.5 be harder to sell down the road? I don't do a lot of mileage but would like a bit more power...

1.4/1.5 litre won't be hard to sell down the road. Nice bit of extra poke over the standard 1.0 litre will always make it sellable.

A3 saloon is a pretty car with the right spec but to get that spec costs shedloads and then you're left wondering why did I spend 40k on a fairly ordinarily under powered diesel (or one of those eco petrols).

Gas when we are asking if a 1.5 will be a hard sale

For something that's arguably an expensive Jetta, you'd have thought they'd need to make the basic ones more visually appealing than they did. The sad thing is they didn't have to.

In fairness the Jetta is based on a MK6 Golf and just about gets away with it exterior-wise but interior it feels ancient. The Audi is a MK7 Golf based platform.

I would expect 7 yeah. Play 2 dealers off each other and I think you can get to 9

I know it's a different brand but I bought a Megane Grand Coupe and got 9% off

You won't get 9% off an Audi unless there is additional discount available. You won't get 7% unless you are buying a lot each year either. 5% may be achievable at a push.

Is the margin that tight for Audi or are they just a bit scabby?

It's just a different approach to selling than what the likes of Hyundai, Nissan etc are doing by throwing pretend money at buyers in the form of big discounts.

9% off a Renault does not equate to 9% off every other marque. As Colm says, some marques offer big discounts (whether artificial or not) or other gimmicks in order to get numbers in the door. Audi don't.

Well I did have to haggle a good bit for it so it wasn't the same thing a 4k scrappage or whatever.

I do understand it's a premium brand and part of that is keeping the price up. Maybe its just me but I think If I rocked up to spend 32-35k on a car, straight sale. Getting say 1700 quid off would not make me feel looked after.

But this thread is not about me so I wont keep banging on about it. Best of luck OP

Margin is that tight as they are a premium brand, not a volume brand like Renault / Ford / Opel etc.

Discount on BMW / Audi / Merc is a lot lower than others.

Do premium car dealers really only have 5% margin?
If so must be hard to make a living or is it the margin on the trade in Makes more?

One dealer shying away from even 5%...
