Ticking noise in car

I have a 2009 be scirocco. I'm getting the rear shocks replaced along with brakes an exhaust repair done next week. Now I'm after noticing a ticking noise. It's worse at around 10-20mph and gets quicker with acceleration. It doesn't seem to be doing the noise all of the time. There doesn't seem to be any link between times it makes the noise. Seems completely random. The noise appears to be coming from rear of car. Any ideas on what this might be? I doubt it's linked to any of the work I'll be getting done. Any advice would be appreciated

Do you notice it when your travelling at speed (i.e. 80-100kmph)? Or is it only at low speeds? Can you hear it with the window closed?

Thanks for reply. No it's more noticeable at low speed. The faster I go the quicker it gets until I can no longer hear it. Ya I can hear it with the window closed. It doesn't seem to be doing it all of the time but I could be wrong on that.

Could be a stone in your wheel. Fingers crossed it's nothing more.

I have a feeling its more than that but hopefully it'll be something that simple ☺

When did it last have an oil change? Older oil will become less viscous and can give the symptoms you describe.

That crossed my mind aswell. It is due one in the next 2000km. Might get it done now aswell. Would that sort of noise come from the rear of the car though?

Slip the car out of gear allowing the engine to idle and see does the ticking disappear. When it's ticking try applying the handbrake gently to squeeze the pads slightly, does the ticking change?

Just try this later. If it does change does it mean the brakes are causing it? I know if I break it doesn't make any difference to the noise

It's hardly something as simple as a screw or nail embedded in one of the tyres.

Do you have alloys or plastic wheel covers ? If the latter, do you use cable ties to secure them ? Has any work been done on the car where someone may have used a cable tie ?

I had a similar issue years ago and it was an unclipped cable tie hitting the brake calliper as the wheels turned.

Maybe jack up the car and spin the wheels manually ?

It's alloys I have in afraid. Thanks anyways. Gonna back it up now when ever I get a chance and look at it again. It's not effecting the car in anyway. It's bugging me.

Similar issue with a car last week

Turned out to be the inner plastic wheel arch car American loose and hitting of the wheel at low speeds. Clipped back into place no issue now.
