Nissan X Trail sat nav update - E480!

    Hi,
I have a 161 Nissan X Trail, some places don't show up on the Sat Nav. I phoned Nissan, they quoted €480 for an updated one. And I believe it's just a new SD card.
    I have 3 questions-
    1. I presume you can buy these elsewhere for a fraction of the price?
    2. Is it just a matter of inserting the SD card (there's a SD input/socket in the car) and simple to update?
    3. Nissan said that there wouldn't be many updates as my car is 161. Is there any way to get more location details? e.g. small towns/hamlets I guess you could call them).

    Thanks,
    Pa.

Inbuilt sat nav is such a rip off. There's no guarantee the new maps will include the places you are currently missing either, why not just do what most people do and use your phone?

Use your phone. 480EUR is more than you'd spend in a lifetime on data charges, assuming you don't have it included already, and for €10 you'll get a phone mount from eBay. Hell, for €480, you could buy an iPad mini and leave it in your car with a sim card exclusively for use as GPS and probably have change left over.

Also, phone GPS uses traffic data from other users and most iPhones and Androids report this data constantly to their data centers. Its why your iPhone knows where you live, parked your car and how long your commute will take. This data can be used to calculate the best route and even re-route you. It doesn't happen very often in Ireland as the re-route will nearly always be longer as we have limited motorways / N roads, but on the continent and US it can be a lifesaver. It also gives you an accurate ETA and you can share your position if you are meeting someone. Ultimately, I have no idea why in-car GPS is still offered.

I have a 2011 built in satnav in my skoda and I rarely use it. Updates are mad money and even in 2011 it was out of date. Using your phone is easier and quicker and more accurate.

I also have the TomTom app on my iPhone - bought it years ago on my first iPhone and it is still a great app. I downloaded the western europe maps on it last year before I went to Sweden and it was a god send .. no need for data roaming.

On android (probably on iOS as well) there is an app called Sygic which is a very decent navigation software. 20€ gets you worldwide offline maps with lifelong free updates. So you never spend a cent again for navigation, whichever country you go to (provided you don't forget to download the map while you were still at home).

There are lots of phone apps, some better than others, but I think OP wants a cheap update for his/hers inbuilt system.

I think GPS receiver updates can be found online.
    Legit stuff could be £109 e.g :
    http://nissan.navigation.com/product/Catalog/Catalog_Xtrail_2015/Europe-NISSAN-Connect-3-V2/sku/T1000-25359/en_GB/NissanEMEA/GBP
You'd need to check that's right for your car...

Then't there's the darker corners of the web which may have uh cheaper updates.

I updated my 2011 Audi Sat Nav myself. Took about 3 or four hours total including research. Must do it again soon, I'm sure it won't take as long second time.

OP, I'd have a scroll through some of the Nissan owner's forums. If there is a cheap way of upgrading then owners on those forums will know about it.

On a side note if your car is 161 then chances are it at least has the 2015 or 2016 version of the maps so there may not be too much to upgrade to. It could well be a case that the maps Nissan use under license (either through Garmin or TomTom) don't have the level of detail you are looking for.

The maps on the Nissan Connect systems come from here, i.e. what used to be Navteq and then Nokia.

I should also add that I've heard on a couple of UK Nissan forums, that Nissan in the UK are going to start giving free annual updates very soon, so it might be worth contacting Nissan Ireland and seeing if they're going to do the same.

Good to know, Renault use TomTom so presumed Nissan would too.

Renault, Nissan and Infinity all use the same maps.

I believe the files are all the exact same.

I could post a link proving this... but given the content of that site, I'll get a slap on the wrist from one of our overlords :)

back in the good old days 2006 we bought 3 commerical pathfinders and they had all the bells and whistles every extra because it was the good times

The Sat nav was in a huge DVD player under the drivers seat the disc went in there , the maps where prehistoric it had an unbelieveable amount of stuff not on it

We *Bought 3 new discs but they we're still far from ideal just goes to show you

Same for my primera I bought new. I couldn't fathom how a brand new car in 2005 came with maps from 2002. The bloody limerick motorway showed up as a field for christs sake and Nissan wanted €480 for a newer DVD.
