Customs charge on $21?

Hi, I bought some glasses from the U.S. It was buy one get one free. I also got a free case and free shipping. My total was $21.21.

When the parcel was delivered last week I had to pay €15.49 in duty at the door.

On the customs declaration they had one pair of glasses priced at $14.95 and one case with glasses at $24.95 - total $39.90.

My gripe is that I did not pay this price, I only paid $21.21 because of the special offer. At this price I should have been exempt from duty.

I did contact the company and asked them to refund the customs charge but got nowhere.

Is there any point in appealing to An Post? I have the payment receipt and e-mails.

Yes I would, maybe send a mail to (Revenue Dublin Mail Centre) dmc@revenue.ie they will let you know how to proceed, they will ask you to provide proof of what you paid, maybe Paypal receipt or copy of invoice.

    That's great, thanks!

I didn't want to let it go. If I'd known they would have put down the full customs value rather than the amount paid, I wouldn't have bought them.

I do some work with the customs. Charges are based on the value, not of necessary what you paid - so free things have a duty value. Shipping as an example, has a value for duty.

If it had been sorted in advance of the COD payment I suspect you might have gotten somewhere, now though I suspect it'll be difficult.

Now you should contact Anpost to ask for the €7 admin fee refunded too as they charge that for collecting the €8 for revenue.
