Change of Surname?

    We got married 7 months ago and managed to get a hold of our certificate today. What's the process for having my surname changed? Is it just a case of bringing the cert and asking them to change it? Because nowhere on the cert does it indicate my new surname, only my maiden one.

    I think you just bring copies of your marriage cert to the various relevant places (bank, drivers license crowd, passport etc) and get them to change the name on your accounts, documents etc

    You need to apply for a new passport and include your marriage cert. Im not bothering until my current one expires. Banks etc - just take your cert in and ask them to change the details.

    You don't have to change your surname and in general there is no official process post-marriage. It doesn't say it on the cert because there's no assumption that you will change your surname. You don't have to.

    There are two ways to change your name in Ireland;

    - By deed poll. Which is a legal change of name that can be done by anyone, not necessarily someone who has been married.

    - Through common usage. That is, by just ringing up companies and telling them to change your surname on their systems. Changing it on official documents like passports and driving licences can be done by showing your marriage cert.

    We are pretty flexible about naming here in Ireland, so if you have gone by the name Jemima Puddleduck for a number of years, then that's legally one of your names, along with the one on your birth cert. It doesn't matter that you have no "official" document legally changing your name. Practically nobody goes and changes their name by deed poll after getting married.

    That's alright, I intend to at least be known by my married name as we have two kids who have Dad's name, and I would like the name to be shared as a family unit. I just wasn't sure if there was someone I should change it with. I have to go for a meeting to get the new PPSN card, should I take the cert with me then?

    I had to get a new passport for getting married, so mine doesn't expire for another 9.5 years :pac:

    I just gave copy of marriage certs to bank and for SW or child benefit purposes ring client identity services and they will change name for you, no certs needed as they have a record. I didn't change my licence passport until they were out of date last year, original marriage cert needed for this

    Most companies, passport office, etc are fine with changing your name once you present marriage cert.
    My parents were married before they had children but my mother didn't change her surname. Never even considered that it made us less of a family! I've actually carried on her tradition with my own family.

    I don't think it makes a scrap of difference in terms of family. I've had my maiden name for three years as a parent, but there's a uniqueness to OH's name that detaches him from the family that raised him and I don't have any ties to the family that shares my maiden name either. It's almost like a whole new name :o

    Sorry to hijack this thread but I see a number of you have your marriage certs. Can anyone who has gotten married in the past few years tell me if their father's name is on the cert?

    We just registered our intent to marry today and only when I got home did I realise that his name was spelled wrong. I am not in contact with him so I would prefer it was not on the cert but if it is, I will have to go back in to get it changed.

    I've tried googling but can only find copies from the early 1900's
