Hi quick question. I'm new to this whole €star rating for pedigree sheep. My question is can a 2 star ram have a 5 star ewe etc?

Don't know what you mean by that, can you rephrase.

Trying to improve star ratings will only frustrate, see how the bulls went this year, improving genetics is the way to go but the present system of assessing stars is not

I think the op is asking if the ram is a 2 star could the offspring turn out to be 5 stars.
Logic would say no but I'm not sure logic and stars go together.

think of stars as betting odds on a football match.
    Barcalona v limerick utd
    or kerry v kilkenny

yes its possible for a 2 star to throw out a 5 star but highly unlikely.
the more they know about your sheep and their relations the more certain they are its a 2 star or a 5 star

Not so sure. Saying a untested sheep is this or that because their related to someone that did this or that, and at best are only 20% accurate, based on what a breeder filled out on their own test sheet. I'd prefer the old fashioned way of judging the integrity of the breeder standing infront of me and what my eyes tell me about the sheep. But that's only my personal preference only.

the way I'd pick a ram at a sale is pick 5 or 8, then use the figures to bring it down to 2 or 3 and then see what way the prices go

I would agree, breeder first, visual 2nd and then figures. But why go for unrecorded ram when recorded available, does it not show additional effort by breeder at a minimum?

Your spot on cran. If first two are right, then figures after that. Only five star ram I bought ( within top 2% of breed ) was a shocker. So sort of left me disillusioned. But if the breeder was decent, then I'd have faith in everything else.

Ya. Bought two rams last year one was a hoggett and was just on grass but was a exceptional sheep and would have regretted not buying him cos he had it all and thankfully his lambs are good two.

The other lad was a good sheep too and was recorded with Lamb plus and things like that but we didn't pay any attention to it.

If there was two possible lambs to buy and ones a better sheep but has poorer stars and the other is not as good but is 5 stars I'd always buy the better sheep.

Thanks everyone for your help. I went and looked at a few pedigree ewe's at the weekend and I'd have to agree with you. Some were 5 star but didn't look great. I am in the same opinion of you. If the better sheep has lower stars I'd tend to go for that instead of one that doesn't look up to its standards and just has the stars to back it up. I suppose if you like the look of it you would be more inclined to buy it.
