Will be interesting to see the pace of play and if the GUI follow through on their commitment to issue penalties where required.

I've played championship golf for over 20 years, there has never ever been a penalty handed out. And there never will.

Some of them are shocking, think they're on the telly.

You playing this weekend golfgorfield? It's damp and breezy this morning fo rthe prequalifier to sort out the men from the sheep!!

But surely thats the exact problem? Surely you should be pushing other players, as a more senior amateur player, to try and change the problem?

Great shooting. There was a nice breeze when he was playing, nothing serious but it wasn't dead calm either!

Good updates on @2017woig and hopefully on http://westofireland.golf for the matchplay from tomorrow as well.

Jonathan Yates 68 today, it's tough out there today, fab shooting.
Colm Campbell 77 today (+10), Sean Flanagan 76 today (+11), will be very close to cut line.

I'm fairly sure one of the guys I watched yesterday received a 1 stroke penalty for slow play...

Nope. Gui would have made it known to media to raise awareness.

So then the 2018 edition of the West of Ireland championship, the opening major of the Irish amateur calendar year is upon us in Rosses Point in Co. Sligo. Alex Gleeson and Robin Dawson are the leading candidates to be crowned champion. Personally I think Jonathan Yates is the one they all have to beat, as he is a very good wind player and a quality ball-striker. Most of the back nine will have out of bounds in play due to the recent poor weather that has gripped the country and Co. Sligo GC was not immune to it.

The weather forecast looks crap to say the least and cold too. The championship started yesterday where there was a pre-qualifier. The tournament proper gets underway tomorrow with the 36 hole stroke-play qualifier, in which 64 players will qualify for the matchplay stage, which starts on Easter Sunday, with a champion to be crowned on next Tuesday.

My favourite provincial of the year. Really looking forward to watching the live tweets once again this year :D

Depending what time I get out of work, I might try and get down there tomorrow evening for a look

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,511 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Robin Dawson certainly living up to his favourites tag. First round he's -7 for 17 holes. A birdie on the 14th(his last) would set a new course record...... can he do it!

Equals it. Nice round of golf

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 259 ✭✭Claregaafan18

Jonny Yates - 2016 WOI champion shot 68 - 3 under and Mark Power - two time Irish boys and Peter McEvoy trophy champion went one better - 67 (4 under). But that was some round from Dawson. He currently has a handicap of +4.6. With rounds like that expect the Tramore man to get close to the +6 mark, let alone +5 for the highly talented Waterford golfer.

What in the name of jaysus are you talking about? The course is the same as any other year.

According to golfnet.ie it states that the seashore right on holes 13,14,15,16 and 17 is OB for 2018 due to what is states are the "very hazardous underfoot conditions and sheer and steep Dune inclines". It adds that "Any player or caddie found to do so in the retrieval in a golf ball or for any other reason during practice and/or the championship may be liable to sanction, which may include expulsion from the event, at the discretion of the Championship committee"

According to the West Of Ireland Golf Championship twitter feed, Robin Dawson has lowered his handicap even more after his 64 yesterday. He is now +5.1

With the exception of the 16th nobody will be anywhere near the aforementioned out of bounds areas and if they are then they really shouldn’t be on a golf course in the first place. I wouldn’t take a literal meaning of that golfnet statement.

A lot go in towards the dunes on 14/15 trying to cut the corner of the fairway

    Some excellent shooting yesterday.

Played the west and other championships for years, some good plenty of bad but seeing the same names championship after championship shoot some of the numbers they do is a joke.

Don’t mind slow play, sort out handicap cheats.

So lads keeping handicaps too low ?

    Definitely.

You’ll see the same names shooting high numbers in scratch cups and missing every cut in championships yet playing off + figures year after year.

How bad are some of the scores.

I'm a firm believer there is a 90 in every amateur golfer out there.

There is only a few scores in the low 80s - I wouldn't call that scoring crazy high for a spring top class links ?

They are amateurs too - so they are not going to hold form like a pro etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,648 ✭✭✭AGC

Don’t get me wrong the standard is excellent and so is a lot of the scoring. Fully accept we are all amateurs and have big numbers in us, posted many myself!

My point is have a look at the names near the bottom, and look at last years results and keep an eye on Munster stroke play, east etc... this year and you’ll have the same lads in the 80’s and missing cut after cut. If you’re playing off a plus handicap and playing all championships and the top scratch cups you should be well able to shoot under par a couple of times in the year or at least mid 70’s.

How can some of these lads be still getting into championship after championship when you never see them break 80? If they play all the championships and a few scratch cups that could be 15-20 rounds so a lot of plus 1’s back. Must be producing some serious results in their home clubs.

My rant - don’t want to take away from the west which is a great event.

Ok - but their is a fair chance that their home clubs are literally nothing like this.

I'd be comfortable enough at home but 4/5/6 shots worse away.

And then off back tees on a championship links - it isn't the same game.

I do get your point and lads should be getting in mid 70s the odd round. But it seems a stretch to go to all that effort to go and miss a cut.

But to be honest I admire anyone who even enters these events.

Have to disagree when it’s the same players producing the same bad scores.

Look at some of the clubs, tough courses as well.

If you’re off plus 2 or 3 you should have the ability to play anywhere.

Some great scores there in fairness.

Anybody know what the handicap cut off was for entry?

What happened with the two walk overs in the top matches today?

What happened with the two walk overs in the top matches today?

Kyle McCarron suffered a wrist injury and sadly had to concede to Jack Pierse after 3 holes in round 3. Pierse I'm afraid suffered a leg injury and also was forced to concede to Alex Gleeson who now plays Portmarnock's James Fox for a place in the WOI final. Naas' Rob Brazill also qualified for the semi-final after winning his match against Jack McDonnell.

The other 1/4 final match is heading for the 19th hole after Robin Dawson and Jack Madden could not be separated after 18 holes.

Watched all of Dawson Madden match today. For a small young lad, Madden played fantastic golf in really tough conditions. He started off 3 down after 3 to 3 pars and looked certain to go 4 down after the tee shots on 4th. Both made pars there and Madden was 3 under from there to the 19th with no conceded putt outside 2 feet.

Funny things from the Brazill match: he was OB on 2 and 6 and made birdie on both with the 2nd ball to halve the holes. He also lost his drive on 14 and reloaded on 15 (but found it). But tomorrow is a different day...

Proud of Athlone Thomas Oconnor up there this week. He's had many tough years on the links of rosses but a really good year at last this year. 2 excellent rounds to qualify and played solid stuff in all his matches. Just didn't get putts to drop this afternoon by the reading of it

He egaled #5 as well. It's tough going when you can't even halve a hole with a birdie :)

He won outright in the end going down the last this evening. Both players finishing with birdies. Well deserved win. Conditions were tough with the rain.

Another win for someone out of Naas golf club, must be something in the water down there.
