Curtain rod - wall or wood surround?

Going to put up some brass curtain rods myself and wondering where exactly they should be attached. We have sash windows with a surround: see https://imgur.com/gallery/UKBrg.

Should the rod be mounted directly on the wood, or above it on the wall (where there's little space - probably an inch or two between the wood surround and the cornice)?

    P.

You could get a slightly wider rod and mount it either side of the window onto the wall. No need to squeeze it between the wood and cornice.

But you could just as easily mount it to the wood as long as its well attached to the wall to support the weight of the curtain and rod.

Its really your personal preference about how you want it to look.
