Player Welfare

The powers that be, in their wisdom, decided to change the u21 and minor championships citing player welfare as the driving force behind the decision. It is very difficult to reconcile that decision with the fact that the Donegal u21 team will play their third game in eleven days against Dublin next Saturday. In fact five of the team, Cian Mulligan, Jason McGee, Jamie Brennan, Eoghan Ban Gallagher and Micheal Carroll will be playing their fourth match in fourteen days having also played against Mayo in the league. Ironically, Jason McGee will not be able to play in the new u20 competition next year as he is a senor player yet he can be flogged this year.
In relation to that Mayo game, I was amazed to see Mayo fielding a player who had clearly been concussed the previous weekend. If he was playing rugby he would have been following return to play protocols and under no circumstances would he have played that game.
It appears that we are still paying lip service to the whole area of player welfare and appearing to do something rather than making a genuine attempt to tackle the issue.
