Thinking of using sexed semen on heifer s this year .have good ebi. And solids sold surplus calves and maidens at recent sale and was very happy with result.so thinking increased heifers could be a way to go do ye think this is a good idea or not.would reduced conception be a problem .

Are the straws still twice the cost with poorer conception rates or have they improved iin the last few years?

Still twice the cost. I never got on great with sexed on heifers, spotting correct heats on heifers is wayy too much a lottery not to mind wasting a sexed straw on it, however I got on very well using them on my best early calved cows, who had a history of holding to the 1st service. Using sexed for a year or so helped front load plenty of heifers when previously we use to calf AYR, but nowadays improving the 6week calving rate and ultimately the CI is a much bigger focus for me so Ive no plans on using sexed in the near future again.
