I found clusters of these yesterday and this is the first time I have come across them in the last 10 years on the land. It is on a small man made hill beside a pond. Any idea what they are called please?

Horsetails and they are a bitch for taking over an area. Brushwood weedkiller will sort them out but you made need to spray for a few years to clear them out fully.

Thank you for the advice, will get at it straight away before they get spreading. I wonder where they came from?

Possibly in the soil that was used to make the hill or may have stayed dormant until the ground was disturbed.

Thank you again. I have looked it up further and I have a battle on my hands it seems!

Kurtail will get rid of it. If ya can't get it there's another spray but it's name escapes me for the moment.
CleanSweep is the name of it.
Make sure you wear a good mask though, there's ferocious fumes off it!!

    Thank you again.

The hill was made 8 years ago as part of a cross country obstacle/climbing hill but they are only appearing now. Maybe the mild winter got them going?

The sprayer will be out of hibernation tomorrow and see how it goes...
