The ABS triggered unexpectedly yesterday, followed by 3 warning lights on restart.

ABS, ESR, auto handbrake and start/stop not working. 2011 Passat. Any ideas?

Rear wheel speed sensors are troublesome on them. That's the most likely cause. A diagnostic scan should confirm.

It's also intermittent, car is 100% this morning.

Definitely sounds like a wheel speed sensor.

Done one of these last week! Check the inside of your rear discs, the one I did was corroded on the inner rear left disc and there was filings sticking to the magnetic abs ring and that's why it was intermittent, if you keep driving it the sensor will go!!

    Update on this:
VW quoted €460 for a new sensor and wheel bearing which they said was on the way out, and had caused the sensor to fail.

I didn't really trust that diagnosis as the same dealer once wanted to change brake pads that where still fine two years later.

My local indy just replaced the sensor, checked the bearing, which is 100%. €115.

I'm obviously reluctant to ever go back to the VW dealer in question, which is a pity, as up to know they have been very good for basic annual servicing.

You'll have to admit your views are slightly biased towards the arguement you want to make.
