Anyone know if council are still involved in building house`s for people on your own land like they used to do few years ago, with the option to buy it back off them at some stage.

Official policy is that this is not supposed to be a supported activity any longer. Unofficially- you may qualify for a council / local authority mortgage - to build the property on your own land (or elsewhere)- you just have to show that you don't qualify for a mortgage from a traditional lender (there are a full list of scheme conditions- enquire at your local authority for further information).

The whole having a council build a property for you, or giving you the money to do so yourself- is being wound down- the policies on which these schemes were founded have been reviewed and found to be wanting (i.e. they enabled the divestment of local authority housing over the past 20 years- which is blamed to a large extent with our current levels of homelessness).

First step- contact your local authority and see what they have on offer.
