    Hi all. Just wondering where the speedlimit drops from 120kph to 100kph on the south side of the M50 traveling North bound.

    https://goo.gl/maps/WntPi1paVys

    I passed a speed van in the usual lay by just after the carrickmines exit heading northbound. I was. Doing 115-120 in the fast lane. My friend claims its a 100 zone but I'm almost certain it's a 120.

    Just for the pedantics. Fast lane is lane 3.

    And it's a 100 zone there.

    Changes speed limit aftet exit 13. So you're grand. (Except for calling it the fast lane!)

    slow = lane 1,
    driving = lane 2,
    F A S T = lane 3

    It's not. Drops to 100 at Leopardstown/J15. Carrickmines is J16.

    If you go back down the M50 using Google maps, you can see the speed limit sign on the slip road.

    And even more pedantics: no such thing exists. Overtake and move back into your lane. Which, in this country, happens to be the one on the LEFT side of the road.
    Basics of driving on motorways.

    pretty sure its all 100 don't remember seing a 120 sign anywhere on the m50. I know it used to be 70mph, but i think when it converted km/h it went to 100 km/h.

    There's no lay by for a speed van in this section. There are two, at Cherrywood, going north and southbound respectively. Its 120km/h there. There is an elevated platform just after the Sandyford on ramp, going south. Its 120km/h there as well.

    Its 120km/h on the M50 after you pass Sandyford, going south, and its 100km/h until the airport from that point going north.

    If you need a visual marker, look for the large white domes of Westwood Health Club, if you can see them you are well within the 120km/h zone or about 30s from leaving it.

    The M50 from the Sandyford junction to the M11 and onward to the N11 until Fassaroe is 120km/h in both directions.

    I meant, 'by fast lane, he means lane 3', just so we could for once bypass the fast lane/road tax posts.

    Yet, here we are

    You're not saying anything new there. For the sake of conversation can you not just accept that some call it the fast lane. Yes they are incorrect, but once everyone knows what they're taking about, does it really matter?

    Again, we all know it's not meant to be called fast lane. Not. Fast. Lane.

    Totally agree with what you are saying,but if we all keep calling it the overtaking lane,it just might sink in with some people to use it as so.

    And thank you for pointing that out good sir. I do realise fast lane is not a technical term, but it gets the message across without being lost in translation to anyone.

    Also, since everyone feels like being pedantic about it, one could argue It is used for going faster than the people in the other lane. You have to be going faster to overtake no?

    Thanks again for the clarifications all!

    if you call lane 3 the fast lane it sort of implies it's Ok to drive in lane 2. It isn't, it and lane 3 are overtaking lanes.

    slow = lane 1, >100km/h
    driving = lane 2, 80km/h
    F A S T = lane 3 <80km/h

    The M50 stretches from Dublin Port to Shankill. Junction 1-3 is 80 km/h and junction 14-17 is 130 km/h

    Such a messed up motorway. Coming from Clarehall, you actually enter the Fassshht lane before being able to move into the middle lane and finally into the shlow lane.

    This is common in other countries. Its also common to have exits on both sides e.g. Exit from Lane 3. I can only imagine the daily carnage.

    For a visual indicator look for westwood? And not the presence or absence of the third lane?

    Correct. You need to pass under the first bridge at Sandyford going north before you drop to 100km/h.

    Southbound, at the start of the M50, is 80km/h for a few hundred meters with almost 4 lanes at one point.

    Honestly my frank answer is 'If you don't know, do 100km/h' as you're probably going to be right.

    What they really should consider on the M50 is average speed cameras along with variable speed limits which can be adjusted to suit the traffic conditions.

    The problem is some Irish drivers can be a very undisciplined lot who just will not observe the speed limits and keep a safe distance from the car in front.

    No, proper enforcement is the key. Or we just capitalise on lane 2 hogging e.g. We make lane 1 and 2 'normal' lanes but reserve lane 3 for 'long distance' e.g. Like a car pool lane in the US or Canada, you can only exit at key junctions. Want to exit? You need to move into lane 2 well before it, miss it?, tough luck and a whopper fine if you try anything. You don't have to be a genus to work out that merging is a huge contributor to the M50's problems.

    Likewise with lane 1, make it a solid line 500m before, during and after every single junction. Keep all the merging away from moving traffic. Again, enforce the bejesus out of it. Slowly, people may get the message that you need to speed up to merge and be at speed before you even consider lane 2 and at the end of the 500m, you might think 'ya know, this ain't all bad' and stay there unless you need to move out for, you guessed it, merging traffic at the next junction.

    Look at all the steel structures that cost a fortune to fit which were meant to house the LED speed signs as they could display the speed to lower if there was traffic or a collision and even close a lane or all if needed.

    These signs should be fitted right away.

    Your absolutely spot on there none of the Intelligent Traffic Systems were ever installed, the gantries are in place, the ducting is all in place too and I know because I was involved in constructing them!

    Worst part is they really needed 4 lanes and these fitted won't ever allow for that.

    F*** average speed cameras

    Normally I'd agree. But you know what I've experienced the M25 and the variable speed limit at 40mph and 50mph keeps traffic moving at volumes which would cause mayhem on the M50.

    I'd rather have to set the cruise control at 80km/h than sit in traffic.

    Trade off being of course that it should go up to 120km/h at night.
