What to do with a few hours between flights in Barcelona

Just doing some advance trip planning. I've booked a long haul flight from Barcelona later this year. I'm in the middle of booking a flight to get me from Ireland to Barca. The flight I'm looking at will get me there for 9.45am - with my other flight departing at 16:05 later that day.

I won't have any checked baggage.

I've been to Barcelona once before (albeit I just took the bus out of the airport rather than metro as was a late flight) but only for a couple of days and flew back out of Malaga.

What can I do in that small space of time? What time should I aim to be back at the airport for - in advance of that 2nd flight (bearing in mind no checked baggage)? I guess I would be happy out getting an early lunch somewhere that's very close to the Metro route (than runs out to the airport).

    Any thoughts welcome.

That's enough time to get a bus or train into town and a walk down Las Ramblas and then come back to airport

    Allow 1 hour each way

What time would you set to be back at aiport? How long does it take to travel with metro to the centre?

Ok, I guess I'm looking for on the ground experience. Can anyone recommend a decent tapas bar/restaurant - preferably near one of those metro stations near the airport where I can have an early lunch - then step back on the metro back to the airport?
