Don't buy in Argos, you need to feel the cases, see how they move, check that the space is organised inside in a way that works for you. Weight is also an issue.

I like hard cases but they can be heavy. I have Samsonite (bought in an outlet) and Tripp from Debenhams.

Rimowa luggage has a fantastic reputation and many consider their products the best and you'd see many heavy luggage users like pilots and frequent fliers (business men with the top frequent flier luggage tag) using their cases. They only do hard shell cases.
They have 2 official stockists in Ireland : https://www.rimowa.com/en-ad/stores/ireland

We bought four wheeled hard-shell cases by Tripp in Debenhams two years ago. Two large cases; €80 each I think but in the sale they were €60 each.

    Best luggage we ever bought.
You only have to glide the case across the ground, no effort required, plus the hard shell covering means it's durable and sturdy.

Samsonite, Mandarina Duck or Rimowa would be where I'd spend my money if you're looking to invest. I think a semi-soft shell is the way to go. The hard shells have no give in them. I have a semi-soft Samsonite that's 7 years old and on the go most weeks. It's been 100% worth every penny. I also have a larger plastic hard shell Samsonsite but the upper lid got cracked slightly when returning from the US about a year ago. I've patched it with glue etc but I can see how they are susceptible to cracks.

I always test every suitcase by walking it around the shop and checking the interior compartments to make sure it works for me.

Alternatively, Debenhams can have good luggage offers

I was curious about the Tripp stuff. The large cases are currently €85 in store and we were going to pick some up last week, but wasn't sure about quality. That's somewhat reassuring!

(and now it'll be your fault if they're awful!!!!)
