i was on before asking for advice on a car settled on a civic but had to leave it for a while, but haveing sold my car now im looking again and finding that there arent that many petrol cars any dealers ive been chatting to been trying to steer me towards diesels. My question is as i only do mostly short journeys to work about 15 mins and one long journey about once a month would this cause problems if i went and bought a diesel ?.id rather buy a petrol but having a hard time finding any near me within my budget.

I'd stay clear of diesel given your use of the car. Maybe, if you give us a budget, we'd be able to recommend something.

Also, have you considered importing it from the UK? you'll have a lot more choice.

    What's your budget?

budget is about 8k ill probably be buying in the north as seem to be able to get a better deal there and its closer to me than down the country.ive always had toyotas but i need a hatchback and dont like the look of the auris except for the newer one which is way out of my budget unfortunatly.

What car(s) are you looking at?

im not sure to be honest like ive said ive always gone with toyota i like the look of the 2012 i30 but very hard to find one within my budget.i was looking at a 2010 focus 1.6 petrol at a dealer but ive heard they are heavy on petrol so that put me off them and ive driven the 1.4 focus it felt under powered.

Northern Ireland isn't great for petrol cars. Not cheap ones anyway. Mainland UK is better value.

    Example:

    €6500 ish, plus VRT.
    €1500 VRT
€8000. You need to add travel costs to that though.

    Basic spec model

    €5800 plus VRT
    €1400 VRT
    €7200 plus travel

Worth pointing out that the new model uses a new engine which is less powerful than the one on the old model.

Yeah i noticed that colm petrol cars do seem to be hard to find in the north as well unfortunatly i cant go to the uk as ill need to get a car within the week hopefully.if i cant find anything ill like ill probably just go with an auris ive seen a few of them in the north.heading into town today to have another check at the local dealers see if they have anyting in my price range.

Been having a snoop around at some sites at the auris and seen they come in a 1.6 as well which i never knew anyone know any problems with the 1.6 ? there doesnt seem to be much difference in the price between a 1.33 and a 1.6 if i have to get an auris then maybe a 1.6 might be a little more fun to drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Not much between them performance wise, 1.33 is 6 speed with 100bhp while 1.6 is 5 speed with 110bhp. The 1.6 is an older engine and tax is higher so could be a bit more difficult to sell on.

The new Valvematic 130bhp engine didn't come on stream till near the end of production on the mk1 Auris
Given that you'd be paying VRT, the lower emissions models like the 1.33 would make sense.
Even though there's only 10 odd bhp in it, the older 1.6 would still be noticibly quicker than the 1.33.

Thanks for the advice guys the 1.6 i was looking at is a cat d so wont be going near that one,i will probably end up going for the 1.33 like you said its cheaper to vrt and to tax,the search continues lol.

So ive settled on getting a auris i think, ive seen one i might be interested in but its in the ad as Auris EDITION VVT-I ive googled but cant find that trim level in the auris, thought id ask the more knowledgeable folks on here if anyone knows.my last corolla was poverty spec so id like to try and get a toyota this time with at least some spec if i can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yeah. Edition spec is good enough. It was basically an entry level special edition. Has alloys, aircon, USB, power folding mirrors, colour coded bits etc. Better spec than a lot of Irish ones.
