Haggling 2nd hand car main dealer

How much would you expect off a cars price? I have no trade in and a cash buyer so I thought I was in a good negotiating position! 3 year old car, reasonable mileage quite clean not perfect has a tow bar so could be argued more wear & tear than normal. I was expecting 10% he wouldn't budge on 2%.
I just don't know if it was my haggling skills or he just didn't have the margin.

Can depend on the car, the demand for that car and how keenly it's priced already, some dealers may be 20% above the going rate in others so can easily knock 10-15% off. Have you looked at what similar cars are going for in other dealers to compare?

There's not many of this spec around 4Wd & auto.. most models are 2WD and manual. I thought maybe the manual version would be in more demand!

It really depends on how well the car is priced in the first place relative to similar ones.
Some garages price to sell, others build in margin that you have bought chip away at.

If the 4wd and auto don't have an adverse effect on annual tax then you might find it's worth more than a manual 2wd.

    What car are we talking?

Tax is about €200 per year more than the manual

    What car is it?

Honestly for a 3 year old car 10% should be more less appropriate. I can't believe he wouldn't budge on 2%?
You could always wait a few more days and then get back to him. Maybe he isn't in a rush selling.
But then you might just as well buy a new one to be honest...?

    Tiguan

I reckon in this case it's worth more than a 2wd manual.

I'm not saying it's not. 'Asking' price of the manuals are less than I have offered on this car

By the powers of deduction, it's already quite aggressively priced by the looks of things and the only comparable one has a good chunk less mileage and is already €2k more expensive for the privilege.

I'd expect him to drop at least 5% for a straight sale cash buyer pretty easily with all said and done, if you really like the car and want it, maybe offer him 22k cash and see if he bites. The other option is to put your existing offer on the table and leave it with him, see if he comes back to you in a week or two to accept.

Have you looked in the UK OP?

I bought a small car last week off a main dealer.
Car had been sitting on his forecourt a while but I didn't know this. He dropped the car 9k to 8k that week. I rang him up and offered 7k, car was like new told him I'd be up Monday and pick it up if he wasn't interested that was OK I was looking at an alternative for 7k and that was my max budhet. Happy at 7.5k to sell it to me stuck to my guns rang me back 20minutes later and sold it at 7k.

That's not the one but I take your point. I have offered the 10% less cash and he let me walk away ☺

Yes same car practically bar colour no tow bar comes out 15% less than asking in Belfast - main dealer also. And that's without haggling up there

Not as much haggling with UK/NI dealers as down here.

Here is a 2015 model with low mileage for around 20.5k ex VRT.

Oh yeah fair enough. Just saying that in a lot of cars an auto would be worth less than a manual. The Tiguan would def have a following as they're relatively rare with those options.
At the end of it, the dealer may not have much margin in the car. They may have too much money on it. If it's overpriced, they aren't obliged to sell it at lowest market value and lose money - they may well get their price from someone else.

UK price dictates Irish prices to a certain extent, but dealers can't take in trade ins based on what they could get a similar car for on the uk or they would never do any deals! If you can save money and get a better car in the uk then maybe you should. Keep an eye on the vrt as the 4wd auto is in a higher vet band than the 2wd manual.

Of course he will let you walk away at the time, but leave your details with him and tell him your offer is on the table. It might take a day, it might take a week, but if he is willing to accept your offer at all, he will come back to you (unless he gets someone in the meantime to pay what he's asking). :)

Just did a VRT calculation on the one in NI I linked to and it's coming in at around 6k so it rather high with co2 of 153g for the 4wd auto version. So around 26k landed but it is a year younger.

If you're importing. A blue motion 2wd is the one to get.

I need 4WD and auto though!

Id definitely consider importing if youre a cash buyer. Discount IS available from dealers in the uk..particularly at the moment as the forecourts are full with trade ins because of the new plates in march. I got about 8% off asking price for one last week. You have a far better selection and the chance to pick up something with low miles. I would always go for something a year older but with significantly less mileage. eg. a 2013 model with 25000 miles rather than a 2014 with 50000....
