car trailer - galvanised or painted

    All,
    looking to get a new car trailer - 6' x 4' give or take, with mesh sides. Most of the galvanised ones seem to be about €1300 or more, while I can get a steel one made for about €950 which is 4'2" wide (wide enough for a 4' sheet of timber).
    What would be the advantages of a galvanised trailer over a painted one?

    It will last longer and not require painting.

    Painted trailers do last though, We have an 8*4 we bought second hand 25 years ago, still good and strong but needs painting every few years. I'd say it's 30 years old.

    Good point Brian, live near the coast too so rust is more of an issue. Do the galvanised trailors get scratched too and need treatment as well though? Also, galvanized trailors seem to have a timber floor, do these rot?

    The floor is what you spec it to be, a 2mm aluminium checker plate floor in an 8*4 trailer should be about €150/200 and last a lifetime. I put similar floor in a 5*3 two years ago for €80

    However a good wooden floor lasts a long time.

    We got 1.5 inch sawn larch for two trailers 5 years ago and I expect to get 20 years from them. Both kept indoors when not used, this will double the lifetime of any wooden floor.
