My mother in laws battery died and the place she went to didn't have a proper stop/start battery so fitted a regular batttery instead (at her insistence as she needed the car urgently) Ahywaybur started fine every day since (fitted about a week ago) Her car was parked up for 24hrs at my house as she is away on holidays and I wanted to move it so went out and it wouldn't start. The engine kept just turning over but the strange thing was when I released the key from the start position back to the ignition position the engine continued to turn over as if attempting to start. After many efforts I got it started and everything seemed fine. I'm assuming that the battery has caused this 'fault' ? Anyone any ideas?

Yes, fit a battery that can handle stop-start. Varta for instance.
AGM for cars with regenerative braking
    EFB for regular start-stop cars.

Yeah I suspected that the regular battery isn't up to the job. I'll tell her to bring it back and get the correct one for it.

The ignitions on a lot of those Toyotas aren't connected directly to the starter, they just send a pulse that says to start the engine. Yaris is the same, you only need to turn the key and let it go, it'll keep turning over till the engine starts (or give up after a while when it doesn't)

That explains why the engine kept barrelling after I released the key. Ive told her to get a proper battery for it as the non S/S battery will apparently burn out the control unit beside the battery.
