Hi folks, a family member has been given notice of a high court civil trial date in the mid summer.

I didn't think the courts sit during the summer, could this be right or could he be muddled up on the date?

Courts are usually closed August and September. But it has been know for certain lists to be set for the vacation to clear backlog. Can be a number of courts sitting during vacation.

If by mid summer you mean July then that is normal sitting month.

Long vacation - or summer holidays is August and September.

Normal High Court and Circuit Court sittings suspended for those months, altho' there are various vacation sittings.

District courts off for August only, altho' there is a court sitting in each DCA each week

The L Vac goes back to the days when barristers and judges needed time to get in the harvest in their estates.

Gradually work is encroaching on that vacation.

Back in the sixties the Four Courts were practically deserted during the LV. Most offices there closed for the day at lunchtime. Accountant's office closed for a month. Law Library empty. Short vacation sittings on alternate Wednesdays.

Most senior solicitors and barristers happily enjoying the West of Ireland or South of France. Nobody who regarded themselves as anybody around.

    Much different nowadays. Eheu fugaces

Thanks for that, few seniors involved, no holidays on that day for them.
