This has more to do with instilling fear in the general public, and puting untold burden on them. A 12 month ban and a 5000 Euro fine will ruin lives. The current legal limit for alcohol is 50 mgs, what is the legal level of THC? According to this law ANY amount of THC in your system is illegal.. It would be like arresting someone on Monday morning for having a pint at any stage over the weekend.

It doesn't matter if you were on a weekend break in Amsterdam and inhaled "Second hand smoke" from some one who does partake. It doesn't matter if you have smoked marijuana a week before the saliva test, and your driving is in NO WAY impaired, according to this idiotic law you will still be fined, banned and have your life ruined.

The reason behind this is more to do with instilling fear and misery in people, and generating money for the state, then making the roads safer. There are countries all over the world who are moving forward in a positve, progressive manner when it comes to Marajana and it's use, and Ireland is staying true to form and moving backwards.

Everyone should flat out refuse to take the salive test on the grounds that the kits they are using have been proven to give FALSE AND MISLEADING results (this is true). Especially if the results will result in you having your life ruined i.e massive finacial problems, job loss. loss of freedom, massive increase with your insurance (if you can get any) etc. REFUSE TO TAKE THE TEST. The Australian Police have been using the same device the Gardai will be using (Draegar)and there are valid concerns about it's accuracy (see link) this IS grounds to refuse. Sorry unable to post the link. Research the Draeger device and the Australian police who use it.
