Bookies no longer offering 1/4 odds??

I noticed at Cheltenham and now for grand national that paddies are doing 1/5 odds for each way. Same on the golf. I know it used to be a case of that for day to day meets but it was always 1/4 at the big races and meets. Surely this hasn't gone unnoticed. Was there anything like a press release on this? Why the change?

I always gathered it was the size of the field rather than the meeting that dictated that.

Powers have gone to the dogs in the last month, their early and ante post prices seem to be the worst available.

Everyone is going 1/4 odds for National but Powers 1/5 (tho they are paying 6 places)

No I think it was handicaps were 1/4 odds but for Cheltenham , the national and golf paddies were always 1/4

There are set general rules for how many places and what fraction of the odds for the place.
We were getting spoilt with all the offers in the past and began to expect them as the norm.

Powers are nearly the worst out there now and that saying something. They have market share so dont need to make the effort anymore. Scum organisation

Everytime they offer an extra place in a race now they drop to 1/5 odds

They're offering 6 places in the National, thats a fair concession to go 1/5 the odds on. If you don't like that, go somewhere else. There's plenty of options

I'd always opt for these extra places as per golf, even if 1/5 (as would be prone to accumulators e/w).
Only Victor has a better offer (currently) in the GN at 6pl 1/4. But (on average) PP has slightly better prices than bv. Majority just offering 4/5pl.

In the Masters (golf) Sky&PP were the first ones to offer 8places (while everyone else just 5 or 6).
That has changed slightly in recent days with the addition of WH, and today '365 joined the 'octangular party'.

They are (were) betting to 150.25% outright on the US Masters golf.
A player I backed elsewhere at 125/1 was 100/1 with them then and is now 60/1.

Will be interesting to see what the over-round is for the Grand National this year- it is usually scandalously high!

At SP they were 130%+ for Cheltenham. Filth.

I think based on a few replies the gist of my question has been missed. We were getting spoiled, plenty of options elsewhere. These companies make enough of a profit so after of my guess 12 years or more of it being the norm that they would be 1/4 on the National, has the change happened without any notification/complaint? The options elsewhere seem to have tightened up too. It just seems like a thing that happened and no one seemed bothered?

I don't think people missed the point about bookmakers going from 1/4 to 1/5 the odds a place.
It isn't the fraction that is important, it is the percentage bookmaker margin. Often they will offer five places but have lowered their win odds so that they will pay out less if you win (on the win part of the each-way), but you will get something small for the place.
I couldn't care if they offered 1/3 (the good old days), 1/4, 1/5, or even 1/6. What is returned is a combinations of the odds and the fraction e.g. 20/1 at 1/5 place might be a good offer.
But I never back each-way. If I don't think my selection has a great chance and is good odds I won't bet. Occasionally I will back more than one if combined they will be a good bet.

    Probably in the 1970s.
It was a gift if there was an odds-on favourite.
Standard practice was to bet the second or third favourite at 5/1 or 6/1 and always collect on the place, while freerolling on the win part.

I don't know if they are the worst.
    Judge for yourself.

    My bets V current offers.
    125 66
    195 125
    (293_back 100
    (200_lay
    724 200
    404 150
    360 175
    510 300
    1000 500

You can back eight places straight.
You don't have to back each way.

Pardon my stupidity but I don't understand that table, what is being tabulated? Also, what does the phrase "you can back 8 places straight" mean? Genuine questions.

The numbers on the left are the odds of my eight bets on the US Masters golf.
The numbers on the right are the odds currently offered by the bookmaker mentioned.
(In one case I backed a player at 293/1 but later sold the bet at 200/1 giving me a free bet at 93/1.)

Where I bet you can back a player to finish in the first eight places.
You do not have to back him each-way i.e. you do not have to also back him to win.

I don't want to turn this into a thread comparing one betting organisation with another, but I'm pointing out that offers like "company xxxxx is now offering eight places" might seem good.
But they are offering eight places in each-way betting i.e. you must also bet the player to win.
You should also judge whether the odds offered are value.
