CD and Old Mobile Recycling?

    Hey folks,
Does anyone know the best way to dispose of small amounts of old CD's and mobile phones that aren't in great condition?

For CD's, I see here it says they can go in green wheelie bins, but I'm not sure if all waste companies and manage them from green bin collections?: https://www.tcd.ie/GreenPages/recyclingfacilities.php

But there's a place in the US that specialises in recycling CD's and I see from their site it says other places don't recycle them properly: http://www.cdrecyclingcenter.com/

For old phones, well before, I would have put them up on eBay starting at 1c plus a few quid to cover postage so someone can buy them for parts and make one work from two broken, but since An Post won't post a phone with a battery, having to go through a courier will be around €35 for a tiny package outside of Ireland :(

Jack and Jill used to take old phones and I think Tesco did too, but I don't think either do any more!

    Any feedback appreciated :)

    So they did.

I'd bury them in a time capsule for future generations to enjoy.
Or put them in a safe and leave it for someone to find and then we'll
    have a new safe thread.

As far as I know autism ireland are looking for mobile phones. I know a friend of mine collected them (400?) and got an ipad in return for her little boy who is autistic.

400 old phones at 1cent each to trade for an iPad?

Just dont tell AnPost that its a phone with a battery. Easy!

The phones aren't really working well so they wouldn't be much good to anyone unless they could fix them up, which may involve buying parts and spending time, worth more than the phone is worth itself?

Anyone know about the CD's? Chuck em in the green bin??

The phones can be in any condition working or not. It's a great way for parents of autistic children to fundraise for them.

Be careful getting rid of phones as identity theft is rife.

Why not? Charity shops are swamped with them, very few people buy CDs these days in the age of streaming music from Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, etc..

I binned all mine a few months ago, don't have a CD player in the house anymore. New cars don't even have CD players anymore with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto or USB stick used to play the owners musical content.

I've probably several hundred in the attic. I know I'll probably never take them down to use ever again, but I can't bear to do anything else with them.

What good are they sitting unused when instead they could be recycled and used in production of new goods rather than taking more of the Earth's resources for the same goods?

When entire audio, visual and literature libraries can be stored on something the size of an almond, at far greater convenience and far far less clutter and baggage, I think transition to such a medium should be encouraged :)

I'm still very much in favour of the avoidance being the primary goal:

If giving away a smart phone, I'd be following the advice of encrypt, factory reset, restart, fill memory again (just leave the camera recording and it should fill quick enough), then factory reset again.

So still no ideas on what to do with CD's in Ireland? :)

Hang a few dozen of them on the windscreen rear view mirror to deflect the x rays off the speed van.

When you say the CDs aren't in great condition do you mean they're covered in scratches and are unplayable? Or is it just that they have cracked covers or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Yeah, a good few with scratches and a good few home burnt CD's and the likes.

Invest in some good Hi-Fi separates and speakers and enjoy them.

    Give them to charity shops.
I occasionally buy used cd's online and they often get posted to me from charities.
I find it's a cheap way to replace mislaid cd's or to get some old music, [I'm old!].

I know somebody who was doing the thing with recycling phones for charity in the past and they only seemed interested in good enough phones.
I'd probably just put them in the rubbish to be honest!

don't forget to do a factory reset on the phones and remove memory cards

You could always make some Dream Catchers with your old CDs. :pac::pac:

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Thanks folks, will throw originals to charity shops, recordables to WEEE, although I don't see any mention of them taking CD's, so maybe recycle bin would be better?

For phones, I checked the Autism Ireland site and all the links on their page about it are dead so it looks like it may be discontinued? I found www.envirofone.com and they accept damaged phones too, so I might try them.

Any further thoughts for recycling of original, music CDs? It doesn't look like the council will take them.

Would the charity shops really be interested?

    How many CDs have you?

Not recycling but this is fcuking cool looking.

Lay them out read side up on a table and get a ruler and a stanley blade. Slice the CDS from left to right with as many cuts neat straight as possible. You need about 24.

Then butcher an old 12inch Clock and glue the sliced CDs behind the hands of the clock each one in a different orientation.

    Art :)

Most charity shops sell CD's so yes.

Places like Oxfam take "like new" stuff and charge more, other places are less discerning but make less.
