New car suggestion

So after 7 years and 270,000 km (200,000 of which are mine), my honda civic head gasket is on its way out. It doesn't make sense to repair as it also needs disks and pads all round (which I had bought and was to put on last weekend), new tyres in the next few months and also possibly a clutch soon too.

So now, onto a replacement. Initially I had reduced it to the following cars: VW Golf GT TSI (170bhp), VW Golf GTI, BMW 3 series M sport, or honda accord executive. After some more research the golf TSI apparently has serious timing chain problems so I've kinda ruled out that one.

All cars will be around the 05-08 year with a budget of about 5/6,000 euro. I drive about 30,000km motorway driving but would rather a petrol engine.
Would appreciate peoples thoughts or experiences on any of the above cars.

    Many Thanks

For reliability and cheap purchase price I'd go Accord.

For motorway cruising I'd recommend something like a Mercedes or a Lexus (you should find an E-Class with a decent engine or GS in decent conditions within budget). If these don't do anything for you then the Accord would be my choice as well in the ones you mentioned.

Just took a look at the GS- very nice looking car, thanks for the suggestion! I didn't realise they were 3L, do you have any idea how economical they are?

Depends what engine you go for, if you can stretch your budget a bit, I'd advise the hybrid version, which is a 3.5L V6 with an electric assist, you should see 30-35 mpg with it, a little less for the non hybrid version (which is slower). Both drivetrains are pretty much bomb-proof and shouldn't give any trouble, rest of the car is also built to last and should not ask for more than regular service and wearable replacement.

Also, the hybrid will be easier to insure, better to drive (that's just me though), easier to sell on (should the need/want arise), usually comes with more toys and, if you can find a 08 model, way easier to tax (especially considering the kind of performance you're getting).

They're not everyone's cup of tea to drive though, but they've been designed from the ground up to munch motorway miles, it's what they do best. I think what stunned me most the first time I went into one was the silence, even at speeds that would be illegal here.
