For those who are interested, there's a book chronicling the story of the Irish Astronomical Society from its foundation, including the Civil War in 1990 which led to the current deadlock :

    'The Irish Astronomical Society: A History, 1937 - 2004' by James O'Connor.

Astronomy Ireland (the title of your thread) and the Irish Astronomical Society (mentioned twice in your post) are completely different organisations....

Does anyone remember exactly when DM stopped putting 'FRAS' after his name?

You've completely missed the point... Astronomy Ireland came about when DM seceded from the IAS.

Is input into this thread completely dependant on the fact the someone has purchased and read this book or was this just meant as an informative post rather than a topic for discussion?

A first hit on searching resulted in a page which features a "Bill Mackle Video of IAS Activities from the Late 1940s and Early 1950s" with the following description:
The video, transferred from 8 mm cine-film made by the late Bill Mackle, illustrates IAS all-Centre Annual General Meetings of the late 1940s and early 1950s, including trips to Armagh and Dunsink Observatories. People such as Dr Lindsay, the two Dr Brücks and Dr Hugh Butler appear as well as Dublin, Belfast and Armagh amateur astronomers. It is noteworthy that James O'Connor has recently completed a book ("The Irish Astronomical Society: A History, 1937 - 2004"), which will be published in 2007. Flyers advertising the book will be available at the meeting.
There does not appear to be any audio, unless its an issue with my flash plugin

It was in response to a poster who said he didn't know the history of the schism in Irish astronomy. Probably there are some younger readers who are not clued in either.

Its time this topic was put to bed. It serves no purpose at this stage as anything that needed to be said has already been discussed in a previous thread.
