I'm sorry, I have to post this. I do feel this is a men's issue as it involves (to the best of my knowledge) men and affects men.

Please guys, be civilized and do your effing grooming - including but not limited to shaving, beard trimming, shaving other areas of the body - in the comfort of your own home's bathroom.

It is not ok at all to do so in a more or less public facilities, less than anything in the gym's shower. Plenty of fellow gentlemen will need to use those after you, and they shouldn't be treated to the sight of clumps of your hair (facial, chest or...other areas) clogging the drain, all over the the floor, wall and even the door.

And please know, I'm not talking about the natural loss of hair that can and does happen by scrubbing; I'm talking about the entirety of 5-6 shower stalls and all the sinks in a changing room completely covered in hair; You'd swear somebody has been busy skinning a gorilla in there. Every single day.

I brought the issue up to management (big gyms chain in the city centre), but of course they can't do much more than putting signs up; Unless they send somebody stalking patroling the changing rooms. Plus, it's not an issue limited to their facilities, I've experienced it in plenty of gyms. It's clearly an issue with US.

Please know, I'm not the squeamish type at all - I've got a very high treshold when it comes to yucky stuff and even plain straight dirt, but the icing on the cake was last night, when I was welcomed to my post-workout shower by clumps of tick hair mixed with red speckles which I can only assume was blood. Beautiful.

I'm sure that the public of TGQ are mostly of the caring, civilized type, but it's still a good venue to get the word out.

    Cheers.

Agree with you fully, what you are describing is rancid.

I've seen quite a few guys shaving their face at the sinks in gyms and think it's fine. Grooming/shaving other body hair in the showers itself is a no no.

It is the not cleaning up after themselves that is objectionable rather than the act itself imo.

This 100%. Its also disgusting when i bring my kids into swimming pool changing areas and find this kind of filth alongside disposable razors just casually left behind for small children to pick up

One of my office colleagues goes to the Spencer Hotel gym for his lunch hour every day, he came back a couple of weeks ago fuming as he said one of the guys was shaving his sack in the showers in the gym but the really odd bit was the fact he left the shower door open so he got a full frontal viewing of this guy squating down razor in action.

My colleague is not one for exaggerating stories so I fully believe him but the incident just boggles the mind.

Maybe he doesn't have hot water at home! Seems a bit strange to be doing it at lunchtime too, no accounting for folks

I know that men in general these days are focused alot more on grooming, I had no idea it had extended to locker/changing rooms. I would have thought that would have been a thing you do at home.

I guess it must be something to do with taking selfies in the gym maybe?

i think that sort of grooming is kind of weird as well, no matter where it takes place, it makes men look very odd

Agreed. While not on the same level as some of the stories (thankfully). Last week in the jacks in Easons O'connell Street I went in to drain the hose and there was a man standing there having a wet shave. Can't understand who would think "this is what I'm going to do today". Respectable enough looking man, not homeless which might make it a bit more acceptable.

You don't mention what he was shaving!
    Hopefully his chin!

Ha. Thankfully just his face but still, Easons is a weird place to be doing it.

Maybe he'd been in there looking for a book and couldn't find one

You learn something new every day. Interesting take...tbh, anything forcing people to be "less gross" is a go with me.

Back to the original topic, let me tell you something - the stuff in the showers are not "facial hair", I can recognize them very well. They're still hair, but from...other areas. And they're clearly shaven off, not "but you are bound to lose some hair in the shower" kind of situation...

Essentially you're saying the drainhole is full of pubes. Don't sugarcoat it man.

More or less...still, the concept stands - do that at home :D

If it's a ubiquitous behaviour then the gym should send someone to clear the plughole during the day. Plastic bag and a pair of gloves. Jobs Oxo in a minute.

I do it and I'm neither.

I'm a bit baffled that it seems to bother you that other men shave their balls.

Shave your balls in the privacy of your own home not in public.

And where do you think I do it but at home obviously.

Why does a plucked chicken come to mind?

That's not the point - there are almost infinite reasons to shave hair from areas of the body, some more important than others; I personally shave my underarms, especially during spring/summer, because I find hair traps sweat and contributes creating the dreaded "wet patch" on my shirt/t-shirt.

But I would never dream doing it anywhere but at home...
