Painful shoulder injury

    Hi

About 8 weeks ago I fell off my bike and had a painful shoulder injury and I am still having pains. I went to see a GP, he referred me to the matter to get an x-ray etc. I went to pierce street physio two weeks ago and he told me what exercises to do etc, I have been doing these, but notice no improvement (there is almost constant pain on the outside of my left shoulder blade) Should I go back to the GP or physio ? Anybody know a good physio in Dublin city for cycling related injuries ? I do light weights at gym 3 morning a week to try to get it moving again.

    many thanks.

In before the lock to say get yourself a MRI. The only real way to see what's going on.

Did they say what the shoulder injury was? The shoulder is a complex joint. What did they x-ray? An MRI would be a lot more detailed and worth the extra money.

If the injury was bad enough doing weights wouldn't be advisable resistance bands and small movements would be more beneficial.

Did you go back to the physio and tell him your issues?

Hi, you need someone to examine you and work out what investigations or treatment might be needed. Either a GP with an interest in musculoskeletal medicine, or a good physio. MRIs are ok, but not always necessary. Sometimes ultrasounds are more useful, because you can get a dynamic view of the tendons etc. Go to someone who can order and interpret scans in the clinical context.

Came over the handlebars a couple of years back. The x-rays were clear. It was less pain, although there was some, than a whole area of reach I couldn't get close to. Eventually I convinced the doctor to refer me for an MRI. I had torn tendons off my shoulder. I had an operation to reattach them. In that respect I would recommend an MRI. The physio matters too. Sometimes physio - or too strenuous physio - can exacerbate an injury and delay healing.

I'm not a doctor but I would say stop going to the gym and doing exercises until your shoulder heals, you are possibly only inflaming the injury and not giving it time to heal. Lay off the weights for a few weeks and stick to cardio work, it wont effect your cycling in the slightest.

100%. You can't heal an injury if you don't rest the affected area. Pearse St is a good Physio. Aidan is former Olympic Team Ireland Physio and a triathlete.

If I had to hazard a guess I'd say you tore 1 of your 4 rotator cuff muscles. A nasty injury that I had/have myself. It won't heal if it is. It takes surgery to re-attach it. I never had the surgery so mine is still a bit weak. I need to do exercises to strengthen the other muscles around it.

An MRI will be the only way to be sure though.

I love the way the OP had been refereed for an MRI, an USS and surgery etc advised or mentioned.
He's been diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear and God knows what else.

Go back to your GP and take his/her advise. If not happy ask for referral to a specialist (though most GP's well capable of dealing with shoulder injuries..

They thought wrist and bone in elbow were broken - so they x-ray the wrist and elbow. The shoulder did not look out of place, so I don't think they did x-ray it.

Best to go back to your GP so.

Go back to the GP who can organise further investigations or orthopedic opinion if it is required.

Go back to your physio for further rehabilitation.

Any other advice here is just speculation. From the information given by the OP there is absolutely no way any sort of diagnosis or prognosis can be given.

For example someone with an acute rotator cuff tear would be barely able to lift there arm. Never mind do light weights.

Surprised this has not been locked with all the speculation on injury.

OP: If your shoulder was xrayed you would know it and have been told. Therefore, if you feel something else has flared up since medical examination, your first port of call should be back to medical profession - not the Internet and not the gym.

Probably because no one reported it, and I'm just back from the match;)
