No need to drain the cylinder in the hot press, find the cold feed from the roof tank which enters at the bottom of the hot water cylinder, it usually (but not always) will have a drain fitting with a barbed hose tail on it. Follow the cold feed pipe upwards and there should be a valve in it. Close the valve and all hot water should be turned off.

    Thanks for reply
Attached pic of my hot press .i closed valves on right which stopped all cold water and hot water to taps on sink .yet shower still has water comin out on when the handle is to the hot side so I'm assuming this is the hot feed.is the shower and sink on different hot feeds?

Id say it's the cold feed still running .. Quite possible there's a valve up at the cold water tank that feeds the showers cold feed have a look and if so try turn that off

It's more likely a separate cold feed to the shower, which is often taken directly from the roof tank, it should have a another isolating valve, but this may be up in the attic close the tank.

I had that valve closed that's why I was thinking its the hot side

Those gate valves with the red handles can pass quite a bit even when apparently closed, they do not seal well at all. If the flow from the shower is much less than normal then you probably have the right valve(s), but one or both are not closing fully. You may have to drain down the roof tank if so. Tie up the ballcock and run the hot and cold taps to the bath down the drain until the water stops. You may get an airlock when refilling afterwards.

Is the hot still running in the taps ??

It can take a minute or two for the hot to stop running as the expansion has to drain

Yeah flow was less when I closed the valve.so obviously not closing fully then.will drain the tank tomorrow so thanks

If you can, when the tank is drained, change out those gate valves for lever action ball valves, they generally make a perfect seal when closed.
