Dublin to Cavan

I'm still *relatively* new to Dublin and was just wondering if there's any way at all to get from Dublin to Cavan by public transport without using Bus Eireann? I don't mind catching multiple buses/trains to get there I just can't figure out how to get there.

There is a way, but it's not a terribly regular one

Get a train from Dublin to Longford

Then 975 bus from Longford to Cavan
