    I'm probably being rather stupid but Google is not helping so far, is channel 5 available on free to air satellite?

    Yes it is at 28.2E:
    10964 H 22000 5/6

    It's also available in Ireland, But isn't available on the Sky Ireland EPG, so you'll have to tune it in manually.
