Hey, I have VW Golf Mk4 2001 and I lost car keys.

I had different key for door and different key for ignition.

I've lost both, what are my options?

You go to your local main dealer, they check your VIN number and you *checks car reg year* hand over more money for a replacement key than the car is worth.

Ignition barrel wont set u back to much for 01 golf. I think it will need programing though. Renew insurance with key cover?

Its no wonder car insurance is gone through the roof.

It should if they get the ignition barrel.

It wont, the key is coded to the cars immobiliser which is read by a ring around the ignition. The new key will need its chip reprogrammed.

If you got a complete set including ecu and dash clocks it would start the car. But at that rate it'd be cheaper to get a key from the dealer.

You could also order the correct door barrell to match the original key.

If you get plain keys and getting them coded should only cost 150 or so from the main dealer . I think there's some indi places can cut and code keys but I would think you would need to give them a key to cut

Ring a main dealer and get a quote

Added: include same original new locks for the door

Some locksmiths can code keys also do a call out service . If you can find one would be cheaper than towing car to a dealer.

Place down in Nutgrove that cuts keys did this for me couple of years ago. He just needed the car for an hour whilst i did my shopping as he needed to code the keys to the ECU or some such. I suppose i was lucky as the car was parked in the car park as i'd lost the only set of keys for it down there. It might be more expensive to get them out of your house obviously. Think it cost me 90 euro at the time for two new sets of keys with the alarm fobs. Car was a Fiesta OP don't know if it's the same with a Golf. Wouldn't go near a main dealer in a fit for that sort of stuff myself.

Has are lost keys the reason for insurance premiums increasing?

Called few key cutting services and was quoted 200 Eur (They can make key without having original, get codes etc..)
Waiting on quote from main dealer, they said 300 Eur for new car keys but 2001 should be cheaper they said, I am leaning more towards dealer option as it seems to be more... reliable?

Btw the keys didn't seem to have any electronics in them, the key for door had cut in it made by previous owners to tell difference between them and there was nothing inside, there is also no alarm on car.

    Incorrect.

Don't be pulling quotes from other threads. It doesn't help your credibility rating.

Got quoted by key shop 200 Eur for key and they will arrive and do it on spot.
Got quoted 170 by VW dealer but there is a catch, I need to tow car to them for programming which will probably be around 100 Euro.

Looks like I will have to go with key shop.

There is a tiny immobilizer chip in the key, the mk4 golf has a 3 stage immob set up the key,the clocks and the ECU must match and there are 3 different variations of this system so going to second hand parts route is a lot of hassle.

Hopefully you will be back up and running soon :)
