getting crowns replaced

    I've had a 3 piece,bridge with crowns either side for 17 years.
Turns out a root canal was missed in my molar (back of unit) and is finally causing me some problems, mainly sensitivity, some pain.
I grind ( hard) and wear a hard guard at night , this had had an impact on the crowns.

My dentist is recommending me getting the root re-done and probably the unit replaced by a specialist.
Due to a heart condition I'm stuck with getting it done here. I consider the risks to great to get them done to far from my hospital!

Dentist told me the canal could be done with the crown in place.

    1. How much work/cost is involved in drilling through the crown to do the canals.?

    2. Same question in getting the whole thing replaced.

    3. What are my options if there is decay in the underlying teeth?

    Thanks guys:)

It is very easy to drill through a bridge/crown to do a root canal, it only takes about 5 minutes. The trick is to preserve as much of the underlying tooth as possible so that enough of the tooth remains to support the bridge. An endodontist uses a microscope so they are able to remove the minimum amount of tooth structure.

If the underlying tooth is badly decayed, the bridge is on the way to failing anyway. The endondontist will be able to advise you when he/she is able to see inside the tooth, if it is worthwhile proceeding with redoing the root canal. If it isn't, then you will have to decide whether it is better to cut your loses with the bridge and consider other options to replace it such as a denture or dental implants.

    Thanks Davo.

Any idea on the cost of getting a root canal re-done?

Re-root is not easy, nor the result guaranteed. Your dentist will have sent X-rays to the specialist so when they contact you, you can ask about cost before you go. Personally I rarely do re-roots, they need specialist attention to have a good chance of success so I can't tell you how much it will cost, I own a Clinic which provides implants, but I can tell you what I tell every patient, if your natural tooth has a good long term prognosis, keep it, implants will be there in the future if you need them but your own tooth is better.
