My heifer calved last week and noticed her flagging up the other day.:(
Drew the teat last night and only half cup of milk was came out. The calf is sucking her. should i restrict her with silage, grass, nuts. Shes out during the day and in at night. Shouldi just put in on hay....
Any treatment advice? Should call vet to have a look or is it too late?

Remove the nuts from the equation and she should be grand. Just make sure the calf continues to suck on it or that she's not kicking him away as the flagged teats can be tender.
Wouldn't have thought flagging would need a vet... you're 100% sure it's not the beginning of mastitis?

Ok... will remove the nuts thanks Lady.
There's no soreness in the quarter and there's no curds or watery stuff, just milk. so i don't think theres mastitis in her.
I might bring her in and handle her again this evening and check..... something i could do without !!

We'd normally just ignore flagging here, just take away any mash that they were getting and keep an eye on them, last few heifers calved here blew up huge but had no issues after a week or so. Though ours had flagged up about a week before calving and it stayed about a fortnight.

    That's what i'm hoping.... Thanks Lady H
Normally id ignore it but seen as she's going to be one of only tworeplacements this year i cant risk her loosing a quarter or two!

Good stuff! Never seen flagging cause a loss of a quarter, though if you're worried about it, a shot of anti-inflammatory would bring the swelling down.

Have a couple of recently calved heifers here that have flagging in all four quarters, one of them got a touch of mastitis in one quarter.
Was talking to my vet yesterday and he said too much salt can cause it. We looked on the label of the pre calver mineral i used which has 18% sodium in it.
I probably gave the heifers and cows too much of it, never thought it would cause this problem.
    Anyone ever heard of this?

Have lovely Simmental heifer to calve within next 10 days . She dead quiet and great sign of milk so I put my hand up under her udder and solid as a bullet 2 quarters , 1 front , 1 back opposite each other ! And heat in it in my opinion

Will get vet in am but I wonder is it flagging or mastitis.

I'd be thinking flagging. Did you check her temperature, a high temperature could be bad news for the calf.

No I didn’t check temperature yet, I caught up for a while today but I need to run her down from commonage later and check temp and vet to have a look, not painful but so rock solid and all area above teat .. be a shame if it’s mastitis

If she is quite enough then maybe rub some olive oil into the quarter it will help soften it and when she calves wouldn't be so tender for the calf to suck.

I spent ten mins twice at her lastnight and massaged the life out of her udder but I was thinking that was there some ointment to promote blood flow

Not so bad, a heifer hopefully, whats she off?
Theres an injection you can get to give for flagging after calving if the heifer is sore but i cant remember what its called.

You'd wonder is KYA a purebred bull at all. He brings all sorts of white heads and grey/white calves a lot of the time.
Tag that calf quick, they can be extremely lively.

Heifer is Simmental with a small blue in breeding so didn’t surprise me , fine calf and yes lively already even doing the navel she wanted to let me know she had a voice on her
